The UK Border Agency has sent out a notification that non-EU students that work above the permitted 20 hours a week would be removed. This is because working above those hours is illegal.
According to Alex Legg , the UK Border Agency chief immigration officer, ‘Non-EU students are generally allowed to work up to 20 hours a week, but if people ignore the rules by working illegally we will find them and seek to remove them from the country.
‘We will not tolerate illegal working which undercuts wages and can exploit vulnerable workers.
‘The UK Border Agency is also targeting employers. We’re happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be done on staff, but those who do break the law should know that they will face heavy fines.’
The declaration became necessary as five Indians face removal from the country as a result of a series raids by the UK Border Agency in Fulham.
Acting on intelligence, the Border Force officers visited three stores owned by the Idea Bright DIY chain, two on Fulham Road SW6 and 1 in New Kings Road, on Thursday 12 January 2012, interrogating employees to determine whether they had the right to work in the UK.
According to the UK Border agency, `Two men aged 34 and 21 were arrested for working in breach of their student visas at the New Kings Road store, while a 26-year-old man was also arrested for working in breach of his visa at the store at 672 Fulham Road.
`At separate premises at 772 Fulham Road a 22-year-old man was arrested for working in breach of his student visa, while a 29-year-old was arrested for obtaining leave to remain by deception.
`All 5 Indian nationals are now in detention awaiting their removal from the UK.
`Idea Bright Ltd were served with notices telling them that they face fines of up to £10,000 per illegal worker unless proof is provided to the UK Border Agency that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out’.
BLACK MAGIC Disappoints the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon Footballers as a large numbers of them still rely on it.
The Cameroonian national football team is the most favourite in the country. Besides pulling huge crowds of fans, it has also complimented the country internationally. According to a recent report by Joe Sa’ah for the BBC focusing on African, he talked about the continued use of purported black magic charms by players in Cameroon. It was reported that their charms has failed them for this year’s match. However, if they had won, the praises would not have gone only to the goal scorers or the team, but also for the men who performed the charms known as the “Marabouts.”
Some years ago, Cameroonian players performed extreme practices such as sleeping at the graveyard a day before their match. Recently, their ‘Marabouts’ has chosen a very simple way for them by providing them with palm oil, popularly known in Cameroon as ‘manyanga’. These they can use for rubbing their ankles as well as for eating kola nuts or even jump over a burning fire before the game. While on field, these “Marabouts” are armed with supernatural powers to confuse their opponents and consequently allow the Cameroonian team to win.
According to Joe Sa’ah, before going to the field, the juju man usually reassures the players not to panic in case they feel a strange touch. According to the juju man, it is a touch of a ’ghost’ filling their boots with supernatural powers.
The Menchum Voice newspaper in Cameroon recently published an article in which it said that, while many believe that witchcraft is fading out, the Cameroonian team still practice it at their local football cup final.
In the 1990 world cup in Italy, while Cameroon was playing with England, a white dove flew onto the field from nowhere during the match, and many suspected it was the result of magic.
According to Mohammed, a traditional healer in the North West Province of Bamenda, “European players take drugs to improve their performance while African players seek for traditional concoction. This is because they do not have access to drugs.” Mohamed claimed he inherited the gift of traditional healing from his father, and according to him, many player and team managers consult him for powers to excel in sports. He added that he can cast a spell on a ball and keep the ball from entering the pool with his magic.
Travellers with the UK as their destination has been warned that bringing internationally protected endangered animals or plants, without permission prohibited. Even if the items are legal in other countries they are not allowed in the UK.
The importation of ivory and other items is regulated under the Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Such species can only be brought into the UK if the correct permits have been applied for and issued by the organisation.
According to Alex Lawther, the UK Border Agency’s assistant director in Wales, ‘Just because items like this are legal in other countries, it doesn’t mean they can be brought into the UK.
‘Travellers should be aware of the rules on restricted or banned items. You are not allowed to bring internationally protected endangered animals and plants, including products made from them, into the country unless you have a CITES permit.
‘UK Border Agency officers at Cardiff airport take their role in enforcing international agreements like CITES very seriously and anyone tempted to bring items of this nature through the airport should think again.’
It is claimed that around 5,000 species of animals and 29,000 species of plants are protected by CITES.
Some carved objects made from ivory and an animal foot, alleged to have come from a young hippo, were found after officers on Saturday 14 January examined the belongings of a 58 year old woman from the Cardiff area, who arrived at the airport after flying in from Zambia via Amsterdam.
The woman was interrogated and said she had cleared a relative’s house in Zambia and was unaware that she needed a permit to bring the pieces into the UK.
The woman was allowed to leave the airport after questioning but the items were seized by the agency.
A series of bombings and attacks claimed by the radical Islamist group Boko Haram has left at least 100 dead ‘dead in bomb blasts’ and much more injured in northern Nigeria’s largest city, witnesses and the Red Cross have said.
Gunfire continued to echo through some areas of Kano on Saturday, despite a strict curfew imposed on Friday night which will remain in place until further notice, local officials said. Death tolls from Friday’s violence, which targeted police and state offices, varied widely as new information was gathered.
“Many agencies are involved in the evacuation of corpses from the streets,” a Nigerian Red Cross spokesman said on Saturday, under the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, following Friday night’s attacks.
“From our tally, we have 121 so far,” dead in the bomb blasts, he said.
Maude Gwadabe, a journalist in Kano, told Al Jazeera by phone that he had seen at least 140 bodies were found dead in the bomb blast.
Gwadabe said the disparity was due to confusion in the aftermath of Friday’s attacks and that victims had been taken to different hospitals, homes and treatment clinics.
“At least 140 people died. The Red Cross and Nigerian emergency services have collected the victims and brought them to one hospital [Murtala Central Hospital], and indeed, hospital officials say 140 people were killed,” Gwadabe said.
In a statement released on Friday, Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attacks and said the blasts were revenge for the recent arrests of its members in Kano.
“We are compelled to write this letter to inform Kano residents of this development,” wrote Abubakar Shekau, the group’s leader.
‘Commenced investigation’
In a statement issued late on Friday, federal police spokesman Olusola Amore said attackers targeted five police buildings, two immigration offices and the local headquarters of the State Security Service, Nigeria’s secret police.
“The police have commenced investigation and therefore use this medium to call for calm among the residents of Kano as police are doing their best to bring the situation under control,” Amore said.
He added that police are “appealing to members of the public to come forward with information on the identity and location of these hoodlums. Information given will be treated with utmost confidentiality”.
Among those killed was a television reporter, Eneche Akogwu, 31, who was shot dead while interviewing witnesses.
The country’s police chief, Hafiz Ringim, has called for an investigation into the blasts, which he described as “well-co-ordinated attacks”.
Ringim is under investigation himself, after a suspect charged with carrying out Christmas Day bombings on churches, escaped from police custody earlier this week.
Some Nigerians have called for Ringim’s resignation.
Scores of bomb blasts in Nigeria’s north have been blamed on Boko Haram.
Attacks specifically targeting Christians have also given rise to fears of a wider religious conflict in the country, with Christian leaders warning they will defend themselves. Some have even evoked the possibility of civil war.
Boko Haram also claimed responsibility for the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in Abuja that killed 25 people.
Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, declared a state of emergency in parts of four states on December 31, hard hit by attacks blamed on Boko Haram.
