Congolese couple has been found guilty of killing Kristy Bamu in the witchcraft murder that took place in Old Bailey.

A couple from Newham in east London, Eric Bikubi, 28, and Magalie Bamu, aged 29 have been found guilty of murdering a teenager they had accused of using witchcraft. Magalie Bamu and her partner had denied killing her 15-year-old brother Kristy.

The victim, Kristy drowned in a bath on Christmas Day in 2010, during a witch exorcism process in which he was tortured, an Old Bailey jury heard.

Eric Bikubi admitted to charges of manslaughter in order to receive reduced sentence. Nevertheless, the prosecution rejected his plea.

Eric Bikubi and Magalie Bamu are both originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The couples were remanded in custody and are scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.

‘No comfort’

According to Kristy’s family, they had “forgiven” his murderers.

According to a family statement read out in court by prosecutor Brian Altman QC, “We will never forget, but to put our lives back into sync we must forgive.

“We take no comfort in the verdicts – we have been robbed of a beloved son, a daughter, a son-in-law.

Magalie Bamu “stoked the fire” of Bikubi’s violence, the court heard

“Kristy died in unimaginable circumstances at the hands of people who he loved and trusted. People who we all loved and trusted.”

According to what Judge David Paget, who was presiding over his last trial before retiring, told the jury of seven women and five men, the case was so “harrowing” he was exempting them from jury service for the rest of their lives.

‘Begged to die’

“It is a case we will all remember,” he told them. “Court staff will speak to you and offer help to you.”

All through the trial, jurors heard Kristy was in such pain after three days of attacks by Bikubi and Bamu, who attacked him with knives, sticks, metal bars and a hammer and chisel, up to the extent that he “begged to die”, before drowning in the water.

The court was told that, Kristy Bamu was killed while he and his siblings were visiting their elder sister Magalie Bamu and her partner Bikubi for Christmas.

In the course of their stay, Bikubi turned against them and accused them of bringing “kindoki” – or witchcraft – into his home.

He went further to beat all three siblings as well as forced other children to join in the brutal attacks, the jury heard.

The prosecution rejected Bikubi’s claim of being mentally ill and consequently rejected his plea. However, it was Kristy who became the focus of the defendant’s attention, according to the prosecution.

Bamu and his football coach partner, Bikubi, believed Kristy had cast spells on another child in the family, the Old Bailey heard.

Kristy had refused to admit to sorcery and witchcraft and his punishments, in a “deliverance” ceremony, became more horrendous until he admitted to being a sorcerer.

According to Bikubi’s defence, he was mentally ill when he carried out the carnage, with a scan of his brain displaying lesions which “probably contributed to an abnormal mental state”.

‘Unimaginable violence’

All the same, the prosecution had rejected this as a plea to reduce the charge against him.

Throughout her defence, Magalie Bamu told the jury she was forced by Bikubi to join in the attack on her siblings.

However, the court heard there was sufficient proof to demonstration she hit Kristy and “stoked the fire of violence” Bikubi had started in the flat.

Outside the court, chief crown prosecutor Jenny Hopkins said Bikubi “knew exactly what he was doing”.

Jenny Hopkins of the Crown Prosecution Service, said Bikubi “inflicted violence on an unimaginable scale”

“His actions were nothing short of torture and he inflicted on the victims violence on an unimaginable scale,” she said.

“It has also been proven that his accomplice – Magalie Bamu – acted of her own accord.

“She willingly subjected her 15-year-old brother to extreme violence.”

According to Met Det Supt Terry Sharpe, “Child abuse in any form, including that based on a belief in witchcraft or spirit possession, is a horrific crime which is condemned by people of all cultures, communities and faith, and is never acceptable in any circumstances.”

According to Kristy’s family, they hope comfort could be drawn from his death through raising awareness “of the plight of children accused of witchcraft or spirit possession and promote the need to safeguard children’s rights”.

Italy Ordered to Pay Compensation to Deported African Migrants

The European Court has Ordered Italy to Pay Compensation to Deported African Migrants captured in Lampedusa.

Italy Ordered to Pay Compensation to Deported African Migrants

(Strasbourg, February 23 – The European Court of Human Rights has condemned Italy for violating the rights of illegal migrants as part of the country’s Gaddafi-era policy of repatriating them back to Libya.

In a mandatory verdict, the Strasbourg court found Italy guilty of demeaning conduct, disrespecting due process and endangering the lives of immigrants by extraditing 24 Somali and Eritrean nationals to Libya on May 6, 2009.

The ruling in the case of Hirsi Jamaa and Others v. Italy ordered Italy to pay compensations of 15,000 euros as well as overhead cost for each of the 22 deportees represented. There were 24 victims involved in this case but two of them have died.

The represented plaintiffs were amongst the 200 African immigrants that were captured by the Italian authorities off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa and consequently deported against their will. The immigrants were deported without neither first being identified, questioned nor given the opportunity to apply for asylum. This, according to the court ruling, broke Article Three of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Another ruling from the court is that, Italy violated a sanction on collective expulsion and went beyond the effective rights of the defendant to seek recourse in Italian courts.

Out of the 200 immigrants that were originally deported, only about 24 of them were able to be tracked down by prosecutors.
In 2008, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi signed a treaty with the Italian government in which he made a pledge to help deport illegal immigrants held in international waters.

Italy suspended the agreement in February 2011 due to the turbulence that was taking place in Libya.

In 2011, about 50,000 illegal immigrants arrived in Lampedusa after the Tunisian revolution and the Libyan war, forcing reception facilities to a breaking point.

A NIGERIAN woman deceived into travelling to Spain to work as a prostitute has spoken out and had made it possible for the police to free the other victims as well as arrest their pimps.

The woman told police officers that she was approached back home by a woman who is also a Nigerian national. The said woman offered to send the victim to Spain to study and promised to take care of all her expenses as a favour to her family.

To arrive in Spain, they travelled through land, passed through a lot of African countries before finally arriving in Italy. On arriving Italy, they crossed over to Spain. Having arrived in Spain, the whistle blower was asked to work as a prostitute in order to pay back the debt from her travelling cost and accommodation.

When she refused, she was continuously beaten and raped until she decided to prostitute and pay back the said debt.

They told her she and the other prostitutes – all Nigerian – had to pay back about 50,000 and 55,000 euros each. This means that all the money they make from their prostitution job needs to be handed over to their captors.

Any refusal to work or failure to meet the stipulated quotas they had to pay will result to raping and beating. In addition, they will be threatened that their family members back home would be killed and their homes would be burnt down.

According to the victim, they are also threatened with voodoo.

The cartel gang are involved in forging visas as well as arranging ‘green card’ marriages to Spaniards. This is in order for the Nigerian girls to become legal residents in Spain.

A Look At 31 Iconic Headwraps From The Unapologetic Erykah Badu

1

Let’s take a look at 31 iconic headwraps from the unapologetic Erykah Badu. For years, the legendary American soul singer inspired us with her music. But that is not the only thing she’s known for. Apart from singing, she is a fashionista with an unapologetic style and gave a lot of coverage and recognition to the African head wrap.

Nobody rocks the headwrap like Erykah Badu. She’s the queen of turban head wraps and she reigns supreme in it. A unique thing about her headwraps is not the way she loves it and was always seen it but how unique she did it. She wrapped it so high that it makes it difficult for one not to notice it. She stole a lot of attention with her super high iconic headwraps.

Whether she was on stage, on the red carpet, or out and about on the street – Erykah Badu was religious and true to her style and was seen a lot with her high rise turban headwrap. But she was not all about her iconic headwraps. She was also a woman unafraid to try something new and different. As such, she has been seen rocking different kinds of hairstyles such as super large afros, blond mohawks, smooth balds, very long braids and several other hairstyles.

In recent years, the queen of headwraps who came into the music scene in 1994 has been seen rocking huge hats and looking as fierce as she has always been from her hot days.

At the moment, the Afro-American Grammy-winning artist is in Malaysia. She was scheduled to perform in the country but has been banned from doing so because a controversial photo of her with the word ALLAH tattooed on her shoulders emerged. The said picture has resulted to a firestorm in the Muslim-majority Malaysia. As such, she has now been advised to remain in the country as a tourist.

It is considered highly offensive in Muslim culture to don any image or representation of Allah on one’s body or in any other non-religious form. Malaysia is roughly sixty percent Muslim.

Below are more photos of Erykah Badu and her iconic headwraps. Take a look and see what makes her the true queen of iconic headwraps.

Nigerian City of Gombe Hit With a Deadly Bomb Attack

According to the police, a group of radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram carried out the attack. Earlier on Friday the same gangs killed five people at a mosque in Kano. In addition, the group had carried out deadly attacks and mass murder across northern Nigeria in recent months. Nigeria is experiencing a surge in ethnic and sectarian violence. In January, an attack on a church in the city resulted to the death of  six worshipers.
Recently, the  police said they have effectively protected a federal prison and police station in a two-hour gun battle with the group. The gunmen caused multiple explosions across the city center of Gombe, killing four civilians as well as injuring a police and an army officer.

Last week, the Islamist sect known as Boko Haram said it was behind a similar attack on a prison in Kogi State. During the Kogi state attack,  about 120 prisoners were freed. The BBC’s Mark Lobel in Lagos said a member of a local armed-force working with the government against the extremist group was also reported dead.

According to Boko Haram, they are fighting to create an Islamic state and wants to impose Sharia law across Nigeria. The groups revealed that the name “Boko Haram”,  means “Western education is forbidden” in Nigerian and they want to end it.

For the first time in its history, a Cameroon lesbian triangle case goes to court. A local reporter told the BBC that three women in Cameroon were accused of practising homosexuality. The three women who involve in a lesbian love triangle appear before the court in their country. The case against lesbian was believed to be the first such case ever reported in court. Homosexual acts are punishable by up to five years in prison if found guilty.

According to Randy Joe Sa’ah, the BBC’s reporter, it’s the first known case involving women and it is not that common for men and women to be taken to court over homosexual acts. Last year four men were convicted on such charges. Homosexually is widespread in Cameroon, husband or wife goes to police and report their spouse, he says

Roger Takala, a journalist based in Ambam, south of Yaounde, told the BBC that crowds packed into the court to hear the charges against the three women. Takala said the three women were arrested in the town, following a quarrel between two alleged lesbian lovers. One partner accused the other of infidelity with a married woman, the argument escalated and the husband of the married woman was told about the immoral behaviour.
