A thief who stole the front door of his victim was caught and made to mount it back.
While driving home from work on Thursday evening a man in county Värmland, northwestern Sweden, was shocked to see his front door zoom past the other way strapped to the roof of another car, local paper Värmlands Folkblad reports.
Bemused but doubting that what he had seen could indeed be his own front door, the man continued on his way.
But as he approached his home and was confronted with a gaping doorway, he realized that it must have been his door that he had seen travelling past at speed. After quickly inspecting the doorway, the man legged it back to his vehicle and started tracking the other car. He was soon in hot pursuit, while at the same time calling the police to ask for their assistance in stopping the car.Officers finally caught up with the door thief on the motorway, and it didn’t take them long to identify the door as the one from the man’s house, according to the paper.
The police and the door thief returned to the house, where the culprit was made to assist the others in putting the door back in its rightful place.
The apprehended man is now under suspicion for door theft, according to the paper
A 27-year-old man from northern Sweden charged with raping a sleeping woman has defended himself by claiming he too was asleep at the time.
The incident took place in June last summer in the village of Vilhelmina after the woman had passed out in a cabin following a night of heavy drinking.
The 27-year-old then began having sexual intercourse with the sleeping woman, according to the indictment, which was filed on Thursday in the Lycksele District Court.
As the woman was judged to be in a helpless state at the time of the incident, prosecutors have charged the man with rape.
But the man told investigators he was innocent as he too was asleep at the time of the alleged rape.
“I was awakened by her pushing me away and asking, ‘Are you awake?’,” the man said under questioning, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper.
The 27-year-old explained that he suffers from somnambulism and sexsomnia, an affliction whereby sufferers perform sexual acts while still asleep.
According to the man, the incident wasn’t the first time he had woken up to find he’d had sex without knowing it.
He said that it happened on occasion that his former girlfriend would tell him when he woke up in the morning that he had had intercourse with her in his sleep.
While sexsomnia is rare, it is an accepted medical condition.
“This is very well-accepted as a diagnosis within the field of sleep medicine,” neurologist Cramer Bornemann of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis told medical advice website WebbMD.
“It’s different than having a sexual dream. It’s full-fledged sexual behavior while asleep.”
According to Aftonbladet, an expert on sleep disorders is scheduled to testify at the 27-year-old’s trial.
In 2007, the sex-while-sleeping defence led to the acquittal of a 38-year-old man accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl.
And in 2011, a man was acquitted on appeal after initially being convicted of raping a sleeping woman while in his sleep.

Actors Colin Firth and Emma Thompson have joined over 10,000 people in asking the UK government to ensure refugees in UK fleeing persecution and conflict are protected here.
In signing the Refugee Council pledge, celebrities, MPs, peers, and over 10,000 people have declared they are proud the UK protects refugees, and are now asking the government to ensure refugees fleeing abuses in countries such as Syria and Iran are able to build a new home in safety here.
Other celebrities who signed the pledge include Jon Snow, Esther Rantzen, Zoe Wanamaker, and Livia Firth.
The petition was presented at an event in parliament on 15th March 2012 at which MPs and peers discussed the challenges facing refugees integrating in British communities, following the publication of the government’s controversial integration strategy.
The event marked the end of a year of celebrating 60 years of protecting refugees in the UK, with the anniversary of the UN Convention for Refugees – the international law that protects refugees’ rights – and of the Refugee Council which has been supporting refugees and asylum seekers in the UK since 1951.
“My son escaped violence in his country, and I am thankful every single day that he did,” Actress Thompson said: “He was able to build a new life here – we have the UN Refugee Convention to thank for that. But it isn’t easy and refugees still aren’t treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. We must never forget the importance of giving people who have lost everything the chance to start again in a safe country and we can all do more to make the UK a welcoming place.”
Donna Covey, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council said they were delighted that over 10,000 other people signed their pledge in support of protecting refugees in the UK. “We urge the government to uphold its commitment to ensuring people who have fled horrors in their own country, like those we see taking place in Syria at the moment, are able to get the protection they need here, and can start to rebuild their lives in safety,” Ms. Covey said.
TV personality Esther Rantzen said: “When I was researching my relatives for the BBC’s Who Do you Think You Are I found out more about the terrifying experiences and journeys that refugees are forced to make to survive. It was a humbling experience which made me realise why we must always do our utmost to be here for people escaping persecution.”
Text of the Refugee Council pledge: “Refugees have fled war, torture and persecution. Refugees must always be treated with dignity and respect, and properly supported to rebuild their lives.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention, I call on the UK government to ensure that our asylum system is fair, humane and effective, enabling refugees to find a safe haven and a new home here.
I urge the government to show international leadership on refugee issues and to encourage all countries to meet their obligations toward refugees.
I am proud that the UK protects refugees.”
Microsoft founder turned philanthropist Bill Gates has been busy trying to persuade the Netherlands not to cut its development aid budget, with interviews and columns in most Dutch papers this week.
On Friday night, Bill Gates apparently telephoned the Volkskrant newspaper and NOS television to express his fears about the possibility of the Netherlands slashing its development aid budget. The call came while the coalition parties and alliance partner PVV are negotiating about a tit-for-tat cutback solution: PVV leader Geert Wilders has repeatedly said he will only agree to reforms if development aid is cut significantly.
Trip
Bill Gates, in an interview with the Volkskrant, said he would gladly invite Wilders to come with him on a trip to Africa. ‘I would show him how spending a thousand dollar can save a child’s life. I think he would soon change his mind about cutting back on development aid’, Gates told the paper.
According to Gates, the Netherlands has always been at the forefront of development aid. It has served as an example to many other countries, including his own: ‘Look Mr President, even a small country like the Netherlands is spending more than 0.7% of their gdp on development aid. And they’ve been doing it for forty years!’ But cutting aid to less than 0.7% of gdp can have enormous repercussions on the willingness of other countries to contribute’, Gates warned.
Child deaths
Bill Gates
He emphasized the pivotal role of the Netherlands in a programme to bring down child deaths in the world from eight to four million. ‘That plan is now in jeopardy. The Netherlands cannot do it on its own. But we need the Netherlands on our side.’
Gates tells the paper that the announcement that development aid might be sliced came as a surprise. Gates, who talked to Prime Minister Mark Rutte in Davos in January, said he had not been given any signal that the Dutch contribution would be subject to further cutbacks after it had come down from 0.8 to 0.7% last year.
More money
He rejects the idea that efficient development aid spending might solve the problem. ‘We already buy live saving vaccines at the lowest price. It’s not a matter of efficiency but a matter of more money. With every thousand dollars a life is saved’, Gates tells the paper.
At the paper’s suggestion that Wilders may feel that Gates could give a bit more than the $3bn a year he is already donating through his foundation. He has a personal fortune of $48bn. Gates doesn’t blink: ‘I have already announced I will give everything away, so he will have his wish. And I would like to invite him to come to Africa and see what you can do with a thousand dollars.’
Column
Gates’ intervention came on top of a column by Joe Cerrel, director of the European office of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the Financieele Dagblad and Trouw. In it, Cerrel compliments the Dutch on ‘keeping their promises at a time when others have backed away’.
Until now, that is. The looming cutbacks on development aid would be ‘shortsighted’, Cerrel says, not only because they would have a devastating effect on people who depend on Dutch aid but also because it would not be good for relationships with countries which, in time, could become future trading partners.
Positive changes
Cerrel cites a report by Seek development which charts the positive changes the Dutch have made to development aid over the years: ‘The Dutch have made a number of reforms to increase the impact of their aid, such as building partnerships with the private sector and emphasizing self-reliance of recipient countries. The number of countries supported through bilateral aid has been reduced to concentrate resources where they can do the most good by meeting the most urgent needs. This means every Euro spent on aid goes even further.’
Cerrel concludes by expressing the hope that the Dutch are ‘smart and compassionate enough’ not to go ahead with the cuts.
Let’s rewind to the 2007 Grammys look, Rihanna’s very first Grammys, where she stepped out in that backless, emerald-green Roberto Cavalli gown. And when I say stepped out, I mean she shut it down.
Picture it: fresh-faced RiRi, still riding high on the success of Pon de Replay and SOS, floating onto the red carpet in a silk goddess moment. The dress? A slinky, flowing dream with a plunging halter neckline and an open back that screamed effortless luxury. The girl was serving tropical realness, and that deep green against her caramel skin? Pure magic.
And let’s talk about that hair—jet black, sleek, and styled into her soon-to-be-iconic bob. She looked like a Caribbean Cleopatra, and the world took notice. This was the night Rihanna truly arrived, setting the stage for her reign as a fashion risk-taker and trendsetter.
Fast forward to today (okay, 2012), and we’re seeing that same rich, regal energy in African fashion, especially Ankara prints. The boldness, the drama, the unapologetic celebration of colour? It’s all there. Rihanna’s emerald Cavalli moment mirrors the confidence of today’s Ankara queens, stepping out in bold prints, body-hugging silhouettes, and dramatic cuts that command attention.
That 2007 gown wasn’t just a dress. It was a statement, a prophecy. Rihanna was never just a pop star—she was a force. And baby, the world hadn’t seen nothing yet.
