Twenty years old Sodiq Adeojo has been sentenced for the shooting of 17-year-old Sylvester Akapalara in Peckham, south-east London.

Sodiq Adeojo, a young Nigerian gang member has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 30 years for the shooting and murdering of a promising athlete. Sodiq’s father, Alhaji Yekini Adeojo is a popular Nigerian politician based in Ibadan.

Nigerian Jailed for 30 Years for Gun Murder of Sylvester Akapalara

In December 2010, the deceased athlete, Sylvester Akapalara, 17, was found bleeding to death in the stairwell of a Peckham housing estate of south-east London.

The deceased had been chased by a gang wielding knives and a gun before being shot in the neck and chest, the Old Bailey heard.

Sodiq Adeojo, 20, of Peckham, was found guilty in December last year of murder, two counts of attempted murder as well as the possession of weapons.

While sentencing him to a minimum of 30-year term, Judge Timothy Pontius said Akapalara was “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

He also added that Akapalara was a “promising young athlete of remarkable ability”.

In addition, Adeojo was also handed a concurrent 22-year sentence for attempted murder and 14 years for the possession of a gun.

Three other teenage suspects were cleared and a fifth faces a retrial.

The court heard that Adeojo was a member of a gang who were looking for rival gang members when they came across Akapalara and his friends.

The judge condemned the “mindless and appalling violence” of gang culture.

According to him, “Such is the prevailing culture in areas of London that young men, and mere boys, for whatever reason, seem to be attracted and stimulated by the idea of belonging to a group that does not recognise accepted boundaries of decent human behaviour.”

Duncan Penny, prosecuting, said two of Akapalara’s friends were stabbed as they tried to force their way through the main door of the block of flats.

Neither Akapalara, who was a member of Herne Hill Harriers athletics club, or his two friends lived on the estate.

According to what Penny told the jury, “After a verbal exchange the three were being hunted down by a group of other youths.

“That second group came ready for the task at hand. One had a handgun, the others had knives.”

Andrew Hall, QC, for Adeojo, said: “He was attending college. We are not dealing with a hardened young thug.”

Natalie Williams, whose mother fostered Akapalara, said in an impact statement that his death had left a “massive void”.

She said: “We know he has gone to a better place and is sitting with the angels.

“He was a gifted young man who never got a chance to fulfil his dreams.

“He began living with the family in June 2010. His mother was still living in Nigeria.

“Sylvester was a member of Herne Hill Harriers and was very focused on his athletics.

“At the time of his death he was trying to sort out his passport so that he could compete at an international level.

“My mother has fostered many kids over 20 years and this was the first time she had lost one of her kids in this way.

“She was devastated by the horrific attack on Sylvester that ended the life of such a lovely young man.”

UK Football Association's Plan to Challenge Homophobic and Transphobic Abuses

In recent years, reports on discrimination and abuse on gay and transgender people in sport has been an issue of concern. The UK Football Association has launched a four year plan to promote equality in football in the UK.

Soon after 3,000 individuals and clubs signed up the Government’s Sports Charter to tackle homophobia and transphobia in sport the FA came up with a plan. It commits the FA to taking action in six key areas to promote lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender inclusion in football. Already, all twenty clubs in the Premier League have signed up. The clubs have committed to challenge discrimination and work to rid football of homophobic and transphobic abuse both in the stands and on the field.

With this, the gays or lesbians, in UK after fleeing persecution back home, can further look forward to fairness in the field of sports. The plan comes after the FA signed the Home Office’s Sports Charter – which calls for an end to homophobia and transphobia in sport. Since last year, the Sports Charter has been signed by 3,000 sporting bodies, clubs, professional athletes, celebrities and fans, including comedian Stephen Fry.

Home Office Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone said: ‘The whole world admires the skill and competitive drama on display in our football grounds but sometimes we also see the worst of intolerance and discrimination.

‘That’s why the government launched the Sports Charter last year. It’s a rallying cry for all of us to tackle homophobia and transphobia in sport.

‘The FA was one of the founding signatories of this Charter and I am delighted to see them take forward their commitment to ensure football is a welcoming place for everyone.’

The Home Office Sports Charter is open to leagues, teams, and individual participants and spectators. The development is also significant as reports reveal claims filed by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTI) asylum seekers, fleeing persecution and discrimination in their countries of origin, are treated differently across the 27 states of the European Union.

The FA have been Promoting the development of the game amongst all ages, gender, backgrounds and abilities in terms of participation and quality, and also involves promoting the availability of the sport to the greatest possible number of people.

Alexander McQueen’s design team has recently been brought in house with the brilliant Sarah Burton at the helm as Creative Director. So not only the collection, but also the show is under the direction of the same team who produce the Alexander McQueen show.

The show begins! Set to pounding, slightly scary, music, the model army strides across the blanket of leaves wearing khaki pieces with a military feel. There are huge coats with deep V-neck collars, coming in greens and blue tartan, clinched in by wide buckled belts. The frocks are a mixture of textures – velvet and brocade – and worn with black lace-up boots.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dominic Cooper & Thandie Newton To Star In Adaptation Of Bestseller ‘Half Of A Yellow Sun’

It’s not been documented much abroad, but Nigeria has one of the most vibrant, active film scenes in the world; over the last couple of decades, it’s overtaken the United States to become the nation that produces the second largest quantities of film per year, behind only India. And while the films and stars of “Nollywood,” as it’s nicknamed, haven’t yet crossed over to the Western mainstream, it’s surely only a matter of time before their influence becomes felt. And now, it’s been announced that Nigerian backers are teaming with British producers for a star-laden adaptation of a novel that tells a key part of the nation’s history.

Screen Daily reports that producers Andrea Calderwood (“The Last King of Scotland,” “Generation Kill“) and Gail Egan (“Happy-Go-Lucky,” “The Constant Gardener“) have fully financed, thanks to help from both Nigerian private equity and the British Film Instute, their adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s bestselling novel “Half of a Yellow Sun.” The novel, which won the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2007, is set during the Nigerian-Biafran War of 1967-1970, when the south of Nigeria attempted to secede and form their own country, the Republic of Biafra, and tracks a revolutionary university professor, his lover, her sister, a British ex-pat, and their houseboy, who are cought up in the conflict across the 1960s.

Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele, who’s had a number of successes on the London stage, including his adaptation of seminal post-colonial novel “Things Fall Apart,” is making his directorial debut with the project, and he’s assembled quite an impressive cast, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dominic Cooper and Thandie Newton all locked into the film. The trade don’t have a firm word on who each is playing, but our guess is that Ejiofor will play university professor Odenigbo, Newton his lover, Olanna, and Cooper will play Richard, a British ex-pat in Nigeria to study.

It’s a pretty terrific cast, not least a rare lead role for Ejiofor, one of our favorite working actors, while the presence of Cooper hot off “The Devil’s Double” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” will undoubtedly help the film internationally. Filming starts in March, before Ejiofor segues to Steve McQueen‘s “Twelve Years A Slave,” so we’re unlikely to see this before 2013, but it certainly seems to be a film to keep an eye on.

Police: Racism Returns to French Football Terraces

French Football Terraces filled with racism as its top two football divisions have witnessed an unwelcome upsurge in racist abuse from the terraces in the 2011-12 season to date, a police report released on Monday revealed.

According to Antoine Boutonnet, head of the National Division for the Fight against Hooliganism (DNLH), “a worrying phenomenon is the return of racism in the stands”.

He cited a fan arrested for making a Nazi salute during a game at Brest on January 28th, as well as “six pseudo-Lyon supporters” who were arrested after “spraypainting the cars of Saint-Etienne supporters and a building with signs resembling swastikas”.

“Although the signs are weak for the time being, we’re taking them into account immediately and we are extremely vigilant,” added Boutonnet.

“There is zero tolerance and we won’t hesitate to intervene.”

Boutonnet also revealed that, although instances of hooliganism in and around stadiums had fallen, the use of flares and other pyrotechnic devices had risen sharply.

Since Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 resumed at the start of the season, police have made 432 hooliganism-related arrests and issued 341 stadium banning orders.

SVP Slams ‘Exploding’ Number of Asylum Seekers From Nigeria, Eritrea

0

On Monday, SVP, Swiss largest and far-right People’s Party, accused the government of inaction and abuses in dealing with a surge of asylum seekers from Nigeria, Eritrea and Tunisia.

SVP Slams 'Exploding' Number of Asylum Seekers From Nigeria, Eritrea

“The number of asylum applications is exploding, crime increases, the costs of asylum progressing from year to year,” the SVP said in a statement, lamenting that processing takes up to four years.

“The Swiss asylum policy is now marked by abuses, absurdities and by inaction and confusion,” the party said.

Over 22,000 people applied for asylum last year, the largest number since 2002 and a 45 percent increase from 2010, according to official figures.

The najor countries of origin of these asylum seekers were Nigeria, Eritrea and Tunisia.

The SVP said it suspects that many of the so called asylum seekers are in fact economic migrants.

A leading figure of the party Christoph Blocher said those who are rejected should be sent back home more quickly. Proposed revisions to the asylum law “will bring no improvement, quite the opposite,” Blocher was quoted as saying by the ATS news agency.

SVP, the Swiss anti-immigrant  party has drawn international criticism over several of its campaigns, including calls to ban minarets and expel foreign criminals. The party has also been slammed over advertising depicting white sheep kicking a black sheep off the Swiss flag.

However,  despite a decrease in support in October legislative elections, the SVP remainsSwitzerland’s largest party, though it has only one cabinet member under a so-called “magic formula” power-sharing agreement.

The SVP, which last week filed a request for a referendum that would impose a cap on immigration, wants Switzerland to reintroduce border controls.
