Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe – Mo • Mo • Lu) is a Fashion Designer and Stylist. Since being voted First runner-up and fan favourite on Project Runway season 5, Korto Momolu has put African inspired fashion on the map.

According to her website, “After Project Runway, November 13th was named Korto Momolu Day in Little Rock, Arkansas”, (which was then her hometown). Although she was born in Monrovia, Liberia, her family immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1990 due to the political unrest in her country.

That move earmarked the beginning of more boundaries she would break in the future as one of the most innovative African Fashion Designers on the scene. In 2009 Korto Momolu made her debut into the international catwalk with her spring collection during the New York Fashion Week.

In an interview with Essence.com, Korto talked about how being on Project Runway affected her. According to her, “It opened up doors that would have otherwise been closed. I learned on the show that the judges don’t have the last word. God does. What’s meant for me, nobody can take away. They actually pushed me to work harder to show them that I do have the number one spot. Nothing is going to stop me from fulfilling my dreams.”

Before her major breakthrough, Korto was creating womenswear and accessories and proceeded to graduate from Parsons School of Design in New York. Married and mothering a young daughter, Korto worked hard to balance family life while following her dream.

During her November 2013 appearance in the Project Runway follow up of Project Runway All Stars: Season 3, Korto thrilled her fans by tweeting news about the pregnancy of her unborn son, Cameron. She disclosed the news using a colourful clip art video featuring herself, husband and daughter with Beyonce Knowles background music.

Korto recently launched her Enchanted Fantasy “Good versus Evil” spring 2014 collection. In the collection, she reflects her love for her African roots and African chic along with elaborate accessories. This collection along with many others was showcased at the New York Fashion Week and was a breathtaking mix of bright pastel colours as well as vibrant animal blue prints and dark black with chunky gold Egyptian inspired headpieces.

It was elegant and yet cutting edge at the same time. There were also some sheer camisole tops and champagne coloured evening gowns with charming clutch purses to match. Some critics present, such as B.E.T called her “a force to be reckoned with” and said her collection was “anything but boring”.

Korto added further in her Essence interview, “As a woman I am the minority in a game where a majority of designers are male. I’m even more of a minority because I am Black. We can’t really name 10 female African American Designers. I hope my story will encourage many young design students to keep on keeping on. It can happen, don’t give up. We have a voice and we need to be heard!”

Meet The Tuaregs – Expelled From Libya, Then Hijacked By Al Qaeda In Mali And Niger

    0

Award-winning Al Jazeera filmmaker May Welsh captures the complex conflict and events in Mali and Niger, as seen unfolding from within the Tuareg community

Orphans of The Sahara is a documentary series capturing the heartbreaking circumstances of life for the Sahara’s Tuareg people, one of the most isolated and impoverished people in the world.
In recent years, the Tuareg have been cut off from journalists, tourists, and aid workers by the presence of al-Qaeda. The three films provide rare and exclusive access and insight to the Tuareg separatist struggle inside their homeland, and to their rivals al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

“The Tuareg story is one of an extremely impoverished people whose land harbours the largest energy reserves on the African continent, and who have been fighting for various forms of self-determination for 50 years,” says May.

Orphans of the Sahara – Return, the first film in the three-part series, premieres on 9 January 2014 on Al Jazeera English. Thousands of Gaddafi’s Tuareg mercenaries flee Libya to return to crushing poverty, hunger and drought in their Saharan homeland, much of which is spread across northern Niger and northern Mali. Barely able to feed their children amidst total state neglect, and with few other skills, in Mali the men launch a rebellion to found their own country, while in Niger they risk their lives to return to Libya.

Amamatou Bint Tigzali, mother of a Tuareg fighter, says, “The story of my son is a man chased by poverty. Hunger that you can see if you look at the women and children around us. He was forced to travel to Libya, so he went. It wasn’t a choice.”

The second film of the series is Orphans of the Sahara – Rebellion. The Tuareg uprising sweeps northern Mali but al-Qaeda emerges from the Sahara to compete with them to control the desert, as impoverished and illiterate Tuareg youths provide the foot soldiers of both separatism and jihad. Al-Qaeda’s presence sets off world alarm, but the Tuareg say the group has been funded and encouraged for years to peel recruits away from secular Tuareg separatism – the real threat to nation-states of the region.

Talha, Emir of Al Furqan Brigade, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, in Timbuktu, says, “There are many weak people – people who have nothing. And you can reach them, by spreading the word of God or by helping and supporting them.”

The third film is Orphans of the Sahara – Exile. The Tuareg of Niger and Mali try to gain control over the natural wealth that lies beneath their ancestral land– the uranium upon which France has been heavily dependent for 40 years. But al-Qaeda hijacks their victory and France intervenes militarily to protect its post-colonial interests in the region. Defeated and chased into exile, from refugee camps the Tuareg continue to demand a country.

The first episode of Orphans of the Sahara will be aired on Al Jazeera English on 9 January 2014 at 20:00 GMT.

Acid Victim Naomi Oni’s Alleged Attacker Is Her Friend “Mary Konye”

    1

Acid victim, Naomi Oni was allegedly attacked by her friend, Mary Kone who has been jealous of her beauty.

Mary Konye, 21, allegedly disguised herself in a Muslim veil and followed Naomi Oni home before attacking the Victoria’s Secret lingerie shop assistant, who is said to have once called her ugly.

Miss Oni, also 21, screamed and could smell her skin and hair burning, the jury heard. She ran home where her family tried frantically to wash off the acid.

But she lost the skin from her face, and has permanent scarring over her body, the court was told. Her clothes tested positive for sulphuric acid. Konye – who had allegedly told a friend she wanted to throw acid at Miss Oni – denies the attack and being jealous.

The Hertfordshire University business and finance student knew that Miss Oni – a friend since secondary school – had been deeply moved by the widely reported case of Miss Piper, Snaresbrook Crown Court in East London heard.

The model and TV presenter was badly scarred and left blind in one eye after she had sulphuric acid thrown in her face in a 2008 attack arranged by her ex-boyfriend Daniel Lynch.

Gareth Patterson, prosecuting, told jurors: ‘Naomi will tell you about her friendship with the defendant. She will tell you how in the past they had an up and down relationship and how the defendant had admitted to her that on one occasion in anger she threatened to throw acid at Naomi.

‘There was a reason why the defendant would have chosen to make such an unusual sort of threat. In the past the two of them had discussed a young woman called Katie Piper.

‘Naomi and the defendant had discussed this and it appears that the defendant knew that Naomi had been particularly moved by Katie Piper’s ordeal.

‘Naomi stated that she and the defendant had fallen out in the past and says that there was an occasion during a row when she called the defendant ugly.

‘She says they were later back on speaking terms and that the defendant said to her that she [the defendant] had been so angry at the time that she had said to someone else that she wanted to throw acid at Naomi.’

Before the attack early on December 30, 2012, Miss Oni was described as a ‘good-looking young woman’ interested in fashion and beauty.

The court heard she left work at the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, East London, at around 11.30pm. CCTV footage shows a figure in a niqab with only her eyes visible who ‘lingered, waiting to see the victim’ and ‘tailed her home’ walking a few steps behind her, Mr Patterson said.

He added: ‘All of a sudden Naomi felt a liquid being thrown into her face. She screamed and felt her face burning. She could smell her skin and hair burning.’

Miss Oni’s mother described her as ‘crying hysterically’ when she arrived home in Dagenham. Her family said her hair weave was disintegrating, as were her leggings and her top.

Mr Patterson said there was ‘visible burning to her nose, cheeks and chin and also to her right wrist, hand, stomach area and left thigh’.

Miss Oni, who had a skin graft to her face, nearly lost her sight and suffers from significant scarring.

Konye, of Canning Town, East London, was arrested and told police Miss Oni was very attractive, but denied being jealous of her looks.

She denies throwing or casting a corrosive fluid with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or do grievous bodily harm.

    The case continues.

OJB Jezreel First Wife: “I Did Not Even Think Twice About” Donating Kidney To OJB

    25

In an interview with Punch Nigeria, Mabel Okungbowa, OJB Jezreel’s first wife opened up on why she donated her kidney to her husband. She said she did not think twice about it, and did not tell anyone about it as she was sure there would have been an objection from them.

Mama J. as she is fondly called has been married to OJB for about 20 years now. See her explanation below.

“I did not even think twice about it, I had it and I gave it to him. He is my husband, the father of our children and I love him. This is somebody I have been with all my life. I did not tell anybody before I decided to, not even my parents because I had foreseen their reaction. There was no reason to inform them.  When I married him, I told God I wanted the both of us to grow old together and live to see many generations. I am sure God knew this situation before he brought us together because not only am I a match for him, we are the same blood group and we are both stubborn.”

When asked if she had ever thought about quitting their marriage, Mabel said,

“It has never crossed my mind. Marriage is for better or for worse. God keeps me going in this marriage and also my husband.  Even though he did not see my inner person when we met, I saw his and I realised he is compassionate and has a wonderful personality. Even when he does wrong, he easily admits his fault and apologises before you go off on him.”

OJB Jezreel has two other wives whom he married after Mabel. His kidney transplant in India was successful and was made possible my his first wife’s kidney and donations from Nigerians.
