Mercy Johnson: Her Humble Beginning, Living In An Uncompleted Building & Her Rise To Fame

In an interview with the Sunday Tribune, Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson talked about how she suffered while growing up. She said she once lived in an uncompleted building with her family and that they were sharing the place with lizards. She went ahead to talk about her she was inspired to go into acting after watching Genevieve Nnaji in the movie, “Sharon Stone”.

See an excerpt of the interview with Mercy Johnson, below.

“Sometimes when I cry in movies, it isn’t the script that makes me cry. When I recall my humble beginning, I give thanks to God. When I remember how we moved into an uncompleted building and had to take cover whenever it rained because of the condition of the house; how my brother did a menial job as a bricklayer to earn a living and those days when we rolled over a stick to cover the windows up till the point when I started acting and raised money to cover the roof… I recall those days we were living with lizards because the floor and the walls of the house were not plastered, or when I had scars as a result of my several falls.”

    How she got into acting..
“After my secondary school education, I failed the University Matriculation Examination (UME) and came back to Lagos to get a degree. While that was on, I watched Genevieve Nnaji in a movie entitled: Sharon Stone. I later approached a friend for assistance to feature in a movie. He said I had a great body and that I would make a good actress. He later took me to the National Theatre, but a role did not come until a year later, when I had my first lead role in a film entitled: The Maid. The Maid was my starting point and it was quite challenging to play the lead role because it was my first movie. I was fidgeting when I saw the likes of Eucharia Anunobi, whom I regarded as a screen goddess during my secondary school days. I never thought I would make it with people like that. So, when I saw her, I was so excited and considered standing beside her as sacred. She actually realised that and later helped me by giving me the needed courage.”

What has marriage changed about you?
Marriage has taught me lots of things and I’ve learnt a lot since I got married too. I know that if I had gotten married earlier, I wouldn’t have made most of the errors I made. It’s good to be married to somebody who is so organised; he brings you up the right way and reminds you of whom you’re supposed to be.

You seem to be enjoying marriage a lot.  You even once said that as soon as Purity (her daughter) clocks one, you would be going back to the labour room …
My sister, marriage has been sweet for me because I have the best husband and daughter in the world. Being a married woman, I have learnt to tolerate things more. It has changed my perspective of life and the way I react to things.

But getting married and being an actress are two different things. How do you balance up?
When I’m not at location, I spend quality time with my family. And guess what? My husband has always been there for me and Purity. It’s obvious we are his priority. He’s a loving husband and father.

Your husband does not complain about those times when you are away?
He doesn’t; he understands the nature of my job. He’s the best thing that has happened to me. People usually say men are not reliable. In the case of my husband, he’s a blessing.

What was the point of attraction between you and Mr Okojie?
What attracted him to me was his fearless approach. You know sometimes, you meet some guys and they get intimidated about you, but not with him. The first time we were supposed to have a date, he said ‘Let’s go to my house so you can cook for me’ and in my mind, I was like “Seriously, this guy doesn’t know my name.” So, I said “My name is Mercy Johnson” and he said ‘Yes I know

5 Ways To Wear A Crop Top

    5-ways-to-wear-a-crop-top-afrocosmopolitan-com-fashion

The New York Fashion Week has voted the crop top as one of the Top 5 Spring 2014 trends on the runway. This does not come as a surprise since lately, belly buttons and midriffs have been reappearing in collections from East to West, South to North Africa and the world over. Here are 5 of the many ways you can wear the crop top.

    The Beach Crop Top
Below,  Draya Michele wears an ethnic crop top with cape sleeves and cute high midriff hot pants .The beige peep toe pumps and coach bag is a good choice to compliment the busy ethnic print of the ensemble. This is a good example of how to wear a crop top in a playful, casual manner. If you have a full figure: wider waistbands with vertical, darker prints will flatter you more. A leaner figure needs a lower cut and narrower waistbands.

Other trendy beauties also spotted wearing crop tops are Rihanna, Kelly Rowland , Solange Knowles and Sade, just to name a few.

    The Sporty Crop Top
Below, Rihanna wears a Baseball style crop sweater with jeans. This is a very sporty and playful way to wear denim. This also works with shorts such as denim cutoffs and a baseball cap

    The Smart Casual Crop Top
Below, right, Kelly Rowland wears a stunning sleeveless crop top with a matching knee line fitted skirt from Versace Spring 2011 collection. Vertical stripes make the wearer appear taller and leaner. It is always a good idea to choose plain accessories if you wear an outfit with a lot of print ,stripes ,shapes or bold colours. This outfit can be worn during the day as well as night so it doubles as smart and casual too.Well done Kelly!

    The Red Carpet Crop Top

Above, Solange Knowles wears an ethnic print bustier crop top with straps. This is well matched with a tangerine maxi skirt and a dainty clutch. This top can also be worn with Palazzo pants , capri pants or a knee length fitted skirt. The most important thing to remember is that the midriff should remain high to avoid showing too much belly button or stomach. Avoid pleats and gathers or elasticated waistlines if you do not want to add volume to your shape. The shoes, however, would have been more complimentary as delicate flat sandals or low heels that allow the hemline to sweep the floor. Wedges are best worn with skinny jeans , shorts or calf length skirts because they tend to emphasise the definition of the leg. They also make you appear taller and raise the instep of your foot so that also raises the hemline of the skirt as seen here.

    The Night Club Crop Top

Pictured left, Sade Adu in concert wearing a studded diamante long sleeved crop top and skirt. This is a very sexy look and is sure to turn heads wherever you go. This look can also be worn with a micro crop top inside or a camisole top if you do not want to show too much flesh. You do not even have to accessorise because the shimmer of the fabric is eye catching enough.

Below are some images of the most prominent fashion weeks this year with the trending crop top interpreted in different forms by the likes of Jewel By Lisa (Lagos Fashion and Design Week), Herve Leger (New York Fashion Week), Lazuli (Cape Town Fashion Week) just to name a few. There is no doubt that the crop top has come and gone before, but it appears it will never stop cropping up!

OJB Disappointed At Dbanj, Says Celebs Used His Donation As Competition

    0

During an interview with Inspiration FM, Nigerian Music producer, OJB Jezreel told Gloria Maduka that a lot of celebrities used his illness and request for help as a form of competition among themselves. He was most especially disappointed at top Nigerian entertainer, DBanj.

According to him, Dbanj, who he once managed, did not come out to reject the news that alleged he donated 7 million Naira towards his liver transplantation surgery in India. He said he did not even receive a dime from Dbanj and was really disappointed by his behaviour.

The most disappointing one for me is D’banj because he passed through my hands, he was trained under my tutelage. That is offensive. I don’t care if you’re with Kanye West, you can’t forget your root. I won’t call anybody else’s name but I will call his because it hurts. His own hurts very deep. And he never tried to reach out to me. It’s not like we parted on fighting terms. He told me he had to go to London and he went. And when he came back it was Don Jazzy, and I said OK, that’s fine. And what he did worked and I’m very proud of him, the love, that’s why it hurts more. He should have come out to say no, I don’t know why you people are saying all this, I didn’t give OJB N7million, maybe a part of him felt embarrassed because at the end of the day, really, are you not supposed to do something?” OJB asked during the interview.

But Dbanj is not the only celebrity the music producer OJB is unhappy with. According to him, some celebrities saw his fundraising effort as a means to compete with one another. Aa a result, some offered cheques and made the news but their cheques bounced when he took them to the bank to pick up the money.

When P-Square gave me N5million cheque, everybody started treating as a competition. They were like, they brought N5m, I want to show that I can do more, or equal it. So they will come to my house, some will drop N2m, N1m, you say thank you, they take pictures and go away. Then you drop the cheque in your account and you see that almost N4/5million is being returned back to you that it didn’t clear. You call them and tell them and they tell you they are coming but they haven’t picked the cheques till now.

But the bounced cheques were not the only thing that surprised him. He said the most shocking ones were the one that came with their camera crew just to show the world that they were donating money to him.

“The shocking ones are not even the bounced cheques. It’s the ones that when they are coming to meet you in the house to give you money, they come with a whole camera crew. Then they will say I’m donating one million Naira to you and the cameras start recording and maybe the guy’s tape stops, and he says let’s take that again (Laughs).

Speaking on how he helped people who were in need like him without showing off to the world, OJB said,

“There were people in my dialysis that I gave N100k each to pay for their dialysis, we didn’t publicise it, we didn’t take photos with them, because I felt that was unnecessary.”

Winter Hair And Skin Care Tips

    0

During the winter, there is a need to step up your hair and skin care regimen. These tips will help you towards a healthy hair and skin during the winter.

    Hair

    Moisturise
In the winter, our hair tends to become drier, and no one likes dry hair! Keep hydrated by drinking enough water as water helps combat itchy and dryness of hair.

    Shampoo and Condition
As mentioned, hair goes dry in the winter to prevent this – you need to find the right shampoos and conditioners that are aimed at protecting and healing your hair. Moisturise your hair more than you would normally do, but this does not mean that you should over moisturise! Having very greasy hair is not a good look.

    Dry
Dry your hair before you leave your house! It is no longer summer, so unfortunately, it is not ideal to walk around with wet hair especially outside. Not only will wet hair in the winter give you the flu, it could freeze your hair making your hair more prone to breakage and split ends!

    Hairstyles
Try protective hairstyles that will not encourage you to continuously run your fingers through your hair, as this will allow your hair to shed. Hairstyles such as; twists, fish tails, knots, or tying your hair up would be a good idea. Use hair oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, argan oil, and a host of other similar ones. They are a great way to heal your natural hair.

    skin

    Keep your body wrapped
This is an obvious tip for winter but this does not mean just wearing hats and gloves. Exposing your skin in the winter allows your skin to become drier and prone to wrinkles. So wrap up like them Christmas present

    Moisturise your skin
Dry skin in the winter would allow your skin to gain winter blisters so it is important that you rub that body moisturiser all over your body. In addition, your lips also need a lot of attention in the winter to prevent them from chapping and splitting. In the winter, our lips tend to become drier. So, with moisturisers like Vaseline and coconut butter, our skin should hopefully stay more smooth throughout the winter.

Keep warm, but not TOO warm
This would irritate the skin! People often think it is a good idea to jump into a hot shower/bath after a cold walk home. However, this can irritate the skin and can cause broken capillaries from the temperature differences. Instead, have a warm shower/bath, and if you want, gradually raise the heat.

    Maintaining a Balanced Diet
This would benefit your skin in the winter, vitamin C’s, and drinking water or herbal tea will help that skin in looking more radiant.

Kanye West Promises To Keep His Mouth Shut For Atleast 6 Months

    0

He is well known for not shutting his mouth. But after a very controversial year, American rap artist, Kanye West has promised he will keep his mouth shut for 6 months.

On Monday, during the last day of his Yeezus tour in Toronto, The 36-year-old rap artist, shocked his fans in a 27-minute-long video where he promised he will keep quiet ‘for six months, at least’.

“Everything I’m saying that’s not allowed, soak it in right now,” Kanye said. “This might be the last time y’all hear me talk sht for a long time. Might be another like six months. At least. You’re just gonna have to run back the interviews and sht if you wanna hear some realness” Kanye said.

Style Crush With Lupita Nyong’o And 12 Years A Slave

    0

Above, Lupita Nyong’o rocked a yellow dress. The 12 Years A Slave star wore the number to the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards that took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on October 21, 2013, in Beverly Hills, California.

In this photo, the Mexican-born actress is wearing a floor length white dress designed by Prada. The Yale graduate wore the outfit to the premiere of “12 Years a Slave” that took place at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2013.

Above, Lupita is wearing a white floral dress by Miu Miu. She wore the gown to attend the Los Angeles premiere of “12 Years a Slave” that took place on the 4th of October 2013.

While Lupita is receiving one nomination after another and slaying with her fashion style, people in Italy think something else. They are making the poster look like no major black star featured in it.

According to the news, British actor of Nigerian heritage, Chiwetel Ejiofor did a fantastic job interpreting the leading role as Solomon Northup in the heart-wrenching film 12 Years a Slave. But in the posters released by its Italian distributor, the black actor was made to look like a supporting character while his white colleagues were made to look like the lead actors.

The posters depicted Chiwetel as a supporting actor. But in contrast, the producer, Brad Pitt, who only played a minor role in the film and Michael Fassenber who played a supporting role, were both made to look like the films leading characters.

The altered posters led to an outcry in the black community and the distributor’s tendered an apology, three days after the release of the deceitful posters.

“We apologise for creating and releasing unauthorised posters for ’12 Years a Slave’ in Italy featuring Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender in a manner inconsistent with approved advertising materials. All inappropriate materials have now been withdrawn. We are very proud of the film and regret any distraction this incident may have caused,” the distributor said in a statement issued on Thursday.

According to a press release issued on Monday by Lionsgate Summit label, the sales agent for the licensors, the inappropriate posters were neither authorised nor approved by any of the film’s producers or licensors. They are currently taking action to the further distribution of the posters.

12 Years a Slave,”  has been nominated for 7 Golden Globes, 4 SAG awards, 5 Independent Spirit awards, and many say it is an Oscar candidate.
