On how she started her natural hair journey,Frogirlginny who we spotted on day one of the event wrote on her blog: “It started with a simple acceptance to love my natural hair that has somehow allowed me to grow as a person. Acceptance of your flaws and your imperfections leads to great things.
Embrace who you are, embrace everything about you, embrace your flaws. They are what make you, you.”
She attended the event with René Daniella (left). Both ladies did not just rock only their beautiful natural kinky hair – but wore these beautiful African print outfit that looked good on them.

Black Twitter is currently on fire and Elle Canada is being roasted for Calling Dashikis The ‘Newest It-item’. The Canadian fashion magazine posted a picture of a Dashiki outfit from Forever 21 and captioned it: “The Dashiki everyone. Behold the newest it-item of note.”
Seeing Africans have been rocking the Dashikis for several decades and Elle Canada is calling it ‘newest it-item’, black Twitter went on fire with anger and called the fashion magazine out. Some were not only angry Elle Canada called it the ‘newest it-item’ but also for the fact that the magazine did not give a cultural background.

ABOUT AAUGUST
AAugust is a new upcoming brand that was discovered by Emelda Mbulo and Suwilanji Katuka. Recently graduated in Fashion and Textiles our brand revolves around tailored clothing and textiles, we combine the two skills in unpredictable unique ways to create garments that are versatile in accordance with your personality.
African print and weaving techniques have been a part of our inspiration giving us the chance to work with both men’s wear and women’s wear.
The WARRIOR COLLECTION was inspired by multiple things, as black Zambian born women we both wanted to incorporate our culture and upbringing, this was the glue of the collection, We wanted to concentrate on skin colour and what it means to be black in this society. We were also inspired by the different representations of skin in non-biological ways. For our male garments, we focused on masculinity and how we are able to make or mask masculinity at any given time using the garments we wear. This became exciting because it allowed individualism to become a subculture, giving us the opportunity to alter our appearance.
For the female garments, we were inspired by the idea of “the ideal woman”, we didn’t want to create an ideal woman’s collection, we wanted to create a collection that embodies the ideal woman. We want to inspire a generation to look at black women differently, to embrace and be accepting of CULTURE.
AAugust prides itself on making bespoke garments with a twist. This collection has characteristics such as Defence, Identity, Tribe, Strength, Culture, Function, Absence, and Beauty these attributes build a sense of security and belonging. WARRIOR allows us to define a character through clothing. “Fashion is born of instinct; it’s how you want the world to view you”

On November 22nd, 2015, the UK’s leading Afro salon review website NoScrunchie.com will host its ever-growing Good Afro Salon Awards. Following in the spirit of its online community, NoScrunchie.com’s Awards is the only ceremony featuring client votes as the only credential for the award. Last year’s Awards were featured in Spell Magazine and Black Hair Magazine as well as on several hair and beauty blogs. This year’s event, sponsored by MIZANI Professional, promises to be a glittering affair that honours the best of Britain’s Afro hair talent as well as the people who make those salons what they are – their loyal customers.
L’Oreal Academy will again host the Good Afro Salon Awards this November in their Hammersmith headquarters, bringing together hair enthusiasts, stylists, salon owners, critics, and industry professionals for a glamorous night of creativity, beauty, and good vibes. Nine stylists and Afro-specific salon owners will be honoured at the event for their superb service and creativity, and all nine will be chosen – in true NoScrunchie fashion – entirely by their own loyal customers in the NoScrunchie community. Categories include weave technicians, colour professionals, wig makers, mobile stylists, and exceptional customer service, among others. To nominate, anyone can simply leave a review for their favourite stylist or salon on NoScrunchie.com for the category for which they would like to nominate them. The competition runs from 22 September until 24 October.
On why the brand decided to create the award, Leilah Sekalala, the founder of NoScrunchie, said: “We decided to create an awards ceremony that any good Afro salon can enter, simply by recognising and promoting the relationship between clients, stylists and salon owners. Clients can nominate their favourite stylists in a number of categories, and those who receive the most reviews will be shortlisted to attend the Good Afro Hair Awards – it’s as simple as that.”
The community surrounding NoScrunchie and its member salons and clients are crucial to its mission, highlighting the importance of the client-stylist relationship in real salon life. Viral, organic, and online “word-of-mouth” recommendations are 80% more trusted by Afro salon clients than more conventional forms of marketing, and NoScrunchie.com has built a community of genuine people engaging and reviewing the best of British salons. Salons report that after listing on NoScrunchie, their client numbers steadily increase month-on-month. The website has rapidly grown to become one of the best and most-used places for Afro hair recommendations and advice. The Good Afro Salon Awards allow our members – stylists and clients alike – to celebrate and honour those in our community that they feel deserve recognition for their speciality and creativity.
