    Working to Aid Afghanistan

    0

Today, Afghanistan is known as a war-torn country that receives billions of dollars in financial aid to alleviate poverty and help it rebuild its public services. Much of the world, including the United States and Canada, is dedicated to helping this ancient land and long-standing nation rebuild its status in the world.

In addition to financial aid, there are a huge number of international organizations and NGOs operation in the region. Key players like the World Health Organization, UNHCR, UNESCO and United Nations Human Rights are active in the country.

Relief has also come in the form of domestic and foreign bodies that each have individual goals and plans for improving one aspect of life in the country. From Islamic Relief to the Afghan Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief to the Dutch Committee for Afghanistan Veterinary Programmes, the world is not standing idly by as the citizens of Afghanistan deal with the effects of decades of civil and foreign wars.

In 2012 alone, Afghanistan was granted $492 million in humanitarian assistance from international bodies. In that year, it was the sixth largest recipient of international aid in the world. Yet, the country continues to score ‘high’ on the ECHO Vulnerability Index.

Despite receiving $46 billion dollars dedicated to the development of the country between 2003 and 2012, Afghanistan continues to remain a fragile state according to the OECD Fragile States Report. In addition to this aid, entrepreneurs such as Ehsanollah Bayat have worked to improve infrastructure and services in the country for many years.

Human Rights Watch suggests that in addition to pouring desperately needed aid into the state, those who grant the aid should use their financial power to insist that the country improve its human rights issues. Although some areas have come a long way from previous decades, organizations like Human Rights Watch believe that there are nowhere near enough concise goals in place nor are there measurable parameters to measure these goals by.

Because Afghanistan has previously received nearly 32 percent of its gross national income in aid, some organizations believe that putting pressure on the government and government agencies to respond to the humanitarian crisis that still exists in Afghanistan.

Although some improvements have been made, women and young girls in Afghanistan are still subject to what would be called discrimination in the best of cases and outright abuse in the worst scenarios. The country’s law, the Elimination of Violence Against Women, has not yet showed any progress in truly protecting the rights of women.

If all of the organizations and countries that donate aid to the country were to come together to insist on an improvement in humanitarian issues in the region, some feel that the outer reaches of the Afghan government would have to comply. With the help of aid and infrastructure, Afghanistan could once again become a sovereign state that boasts the stability it witnessed before the civil wars of the 1970s.

The Flying Stars is an upcoming Al Jazeera documentary about Bornor Kargbo, captain of The Flying Stars football team in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The country is home to one in five of the world’s amputees as a result of the 1991-2002 civil war, which cost Bornor his leg.

“When I started training, people would say, ‘Oh, this guy has one leg. How can he play football?’ But I did not listen to anybody,” says Bornor, who taught himself to play on crutches and has now competed in three amputee World Cups on three continents.

The Flying Stars is a complex character study of a remarkable man who is both inspiring and haunted, of an ageing sports star with a family to provide for, who must face up to a future where soccer will be a passion, not a career.

The Flying Stars premieres on Sunday, 13 September, at 2230GMT on Witness, Al Jazeera’s observational documentary strand, with repeats on 14 September at 0930, 15 September 0330, 16 September 1630 and 17 September 0530GMT

While the European Union is discussing ways o find a lasting solution to the worst refugee crisis to have ever hit it and have agreed to share the immigrants among member states, Hungary has refused to take responsibility and shelter some of the people arriving in its borders.

A new coverage sees Hungarian police men escorting Syrian refugees as they march en mass from Budapest towards Austria. This development has sparked a controversial discussion in many western European member states where the eastern states have been described as sole benefactors and opportunistic parasites who only take but never gives back. Since joining the union, Hungary and several eastern member states of the European Union have received and continues to receive huge sums of monies from richer member states to develop its infrastructures and industries.

No Love For Caitlyn Jenner, The Kardashian Sisters Are Angry!

No Love For Caitlyn Jenner, The Kardashian Sisters Are Angry

There is no love for Caitlyn Jenner at the moment, the Kardashian sisters are angry with her. The public support of Bruce Jenner’s sex change to a woman now known as Caitlyn Jenner by the Kardashian sisters is just a show, the Us Weekly has reported. According to the American celebrity magazine, Kim, Kourtney and Khloe are fighting with Caitlyn Jenner in private for painting their mother black and make her look bad to the public.

“There’s not a lot of love for Caitlyn. Vanity Fair was the start of the downfall. It came out and they looked like idiots, they first saw the article on Twitter! The Kardashians were furious once they realised she took jabs at Kris, a lot of times she wasn’t very nice. They are so incensed that they may be done with Caitlyn for good. Everyone has turned their backs on her.” Close family sources told Us Weekly.

“So much so that communication between the stepfather and the stepchildren has nearly stopped. Texts halted as Caitlyn distanced herself at her secluded Malibu estate. Caitlyn has this aura around her that she is better than them. The bad blood has led to a cease in communication,’ a Kardashian confidant explained to Us.

And the anger for antagonising his ex-wife, Kris is not all. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians (KUWTK) trio still addresses Caitlyn as Bruce. “Khloe, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian still call Caitlyn Jenner by her former name Bruce – and Khloe claims Caitlyn’s “completely fine” with that,” wrote the Mirror UK in July.

What is your view on this matter? Do you think it’s a good idea the sisters are not supporting Caitlyn ‘Bruce’ Jenner but pretending to do so in public?

    ABOUT AFRICA ON THE SQUARE

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has confirmed more details of the African festival he is bringing to Trafalgar Square on Saturday 10 October, as part of the capital’s Black History Month celebrations.

Everyone is invited to attend Africa on the Square, which has an exciting programme inspired by the traditions and cultures of the African continent. The free celebration follows on from the huge success of last year’s inaugural event and is sponsored by Lebara and Air France and supported by media partner The Voice.

The stage line-up, compered by Esther Alade and Usifu Jalloh, the Cowfoot Prince, reflects the diversity of London African communities. Kemi, winner of the talent competition held at the event last year, will make a special appearance on the day. There will be a West African drumming circle, plus African acrobats and dancers.
