UK: Immigrants Have a Higher Risk of HIV and TB

    3

According to a recently concluded report from the Health Protection Agency’s (HPA), 70% of TB, HIV and malaria suffers in the UK (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) are made up of immigrants. These are UK residents that were born outside the country.

The report also indicates that around 60 percent of newly diagnosed cases of HIV, and 80 percent of hepatitis B infected British blood donors were born outside the UK.

According to the recommendations from HPA, foreign-born UK residents should be given access to culturally competent and language supported services.

Health risks to UK residents born outside the country can endure for a number of years after arriving and living in the UK. For instance, about 77% of the TB cases that were diagnosed in 2010 were among residents that have lived in the UK for two years and longer.

Around 50% of foreign-born UK men who had sex with men with a newly diagnosed HIV infection between 2001 and 2010 had possibly acquired their infection within the UK.

Immigrants have a higher probability of carrying these infections because these diseases are common in the countries where they are originally from. She said the immigrants had either been infected before coming to the UK or they became infected while they were on visits to their home country. The latter are the main risk group for some travel-associated infections diagnosed in the UK such as malaria and enteric fever.

She said the immigrants had either been infected before coming to the UK or they became infected while they were on visits to their home country. The latter are the main risk group for some travel-associated infections diagnosed in the UK such as malaria and enteric fever.

Where information was available 61 per cent of malaria cases reported in the UK in 2010 and 87 per cent of enteric fever cases in England, Wales and Northern Ireland were in foreign-born UK residents who travelled abroad to visit friends and relatives. Both of these diseases can be prevented through pre-travel advice and be taking appropriate prophylactic measures.

According to Dr Jane Jones, Consultant Epidemiologist and Head of the Travel and Migrant Health Section at the HPA, “The majority of non-UK born residents do not have infectious diseases but some are at higher risk than the UK born residents because of their exposures and their life experiences prior to, during and after migration.

“Timely identification of risk and diagnosis of infection can improve health outcomes. Primary care practitioners in particular play a vital role in identifying people at risk and ensuring appropriate management, and it is important to remember that risk to non-UK born residents does not end on arrival in the UK.”

It also recommends a co-ordinated approach to assess newly migrated patient’s health needs, including improving the collection of country of birth information as this is an indicator of possible risk.

Dr. Jones added: “By supporting UK practitioners to recognise and appropriately manage the health needs of non-UK born people, the HPA aims to contribute to the reduction of the burden of infectious disease in the populations that are at highest risk.”

Italy: 60,000 Immigrants Received In 2011

According to the information released by the Civil Protection (Protezione Civile) in Italy, about 60 thousand immigrants came into the country by boats. Of this figure, approximately 24 thousand of them were from Tunisian. About 50 thousand of them landed on the coast of Lampedusa and Linosa. Of these figures, about 10,611 received residence permits based on humanitarian grounds.

The riots of the Arab Spring and the Libyan war resulted to the mass migration of North African s to Italy. As a result of the situation, the Italian government declared a state of humanitarian emergency to help the people fleeing the situation to seek asylum in a safe land. The emergency declaration began on February 12 2011 and was subsequently extended until December 31 2012.

The intervention of the National System of Civil Protection was required to work together with the Union of Italian Provinces (UPI) and the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) to formulate a strategy to manage incoming immigrants and ensure they are evenly spread around the country.

    Ghana: Where Is The Love?

    0

This woman was travelling in these truck loaded with cassava, unfortunately the car had an accident. This woman laid helpless, the serious part is this: three motor bike riders stood unconcerned while this woman was suffering. It took me to say ” I will give money to anyone who would use the bike to take the woman to the hospital”. Then the owners of the bikes came forward. Lesson: our society has become so money and material conscious that the basic human values of our society are being thrown to the dogs. Its a shame!

Maroni: Don't Allow New Foreign Workers Into Italy

Mr Maroni Roberto the Former Home Affairs Minister has enquired the Italian government to prevent new foreign workers from entering the country in 2012.

According to Mr. Maroni, new job opportunities should be given to Italians instead of allowing non-EU immigrant workers to come into the country. This is because analyst’s has projected that many Italian citizens and residents are going to lose their jobs.

Mr. Maroni said opening the Italy’s borders to new foreign workers may probably incite social tension which at the moment could possibly result to a “social revolt”

Torome Sision, The Woman Whose Naked Shot Rocked Nigeria Blogosphere

    0

Over the past few days, the Nigerian blogosphere has been rocked with the photo of a lady who allegedly jumped over the security barrier to get close to Dbanj at the Koko concert that was recently organised in the mega city of Lagos. How is this news? You might ask. However, knowing Nigeria and its citizens, a lady jumping over and exposing her p…y is a big deal, especially when she has no panties to cover her that place.

Nevertheless, the narration about the time, place and year of this incident was inaccurately reported according Zoliad. They can authoritatively disclose that the picture in question was taken in 2009 at a P-Square concert in Kenya. The lady in the midst of this whole saga is known as Torome Sision, a Kenyan actress.

At the time Torome played the part of sexpot ‘Rita’ on ’Tabasuma’ a soap opera on Kenya’s Citizen TV, she was also the face of Brookside Yoghurt, Kenya.

Regrettably, her antics resulted to her losing both roles. Torome currently lives in Nairobi Kenya.

A 15-year-old Afghan girl was found tortured by her family and in-laws because she refused to be forced into prostitution. Her hair was ripped off while her nails were pulled out. She was starved and locked up before she was finally rescued by the police.

On December 31, 2011, the Afghan child bride whose name is Sahar Gul, spoke with the Afghan Minister of Women’s Affairs Husn Banu Ghazanfar as she recovers from her pains and injuries at the hospital in Kabul.

The teenager was found and rescued by the Aghan police. For more than five months, Sahar Gul was beaten and locked up in a toilet for refusing to go into prostitution as demanded by her in-laws.

The teenage bride was found on December 26 after her parents made a report to the police that their daughter was missing. She was found in the basement of her husband’s house in northeastern Baghlan province.
