    Nigeria’s Mo Abudu, the Founder and Chief Executive of EbonyLife TV, was the only black woman listed on Hollywood Reporter‘s 25 most powerful women in Global TV. According to Hollywood Reporter “Nigerian entrepreneur Mo Abudu is revolutionizing pay TV in Africa.”

    In the report, in which the self taught TV presenter and entrepreneur was listed among other women such as Shine chairman ElisabethMurdoch, FremantleMedia boss Cecile Frot-Coutaz, Endemol COO Martha Brass and many others.

    Over the years, Mo has been likened to American talk show host and media mogul, Oprah Winfrey. Thus, many see her as the Oprah Winfrey of Africa.

    A few years ago, many Africans, especially celebrities and the elites did not consider African fashion as something fashionable. It was looked upon as local and unpolished. But today, the tables have turned around and African and African inspired pieces are now the rave. As a result, it is no more a secret to see well established and internationally known fashion labels visiting Africa to get the authentic and exotic African inspiration.

    The love and appreciation for Africa and African inspired fashion was made possible by fashion shows such as Africa Fashion Week London, Africa Fashion Week New York, Africa Fashion International, Adiree Fashion Week and a host of other Africa-related fashions shows. They helped in putting Africa and African inspired fashion on the spotlight.

    As a result, many African brands are competing well internationally. Also, more hopes to take their designs and brands to catwalks and runways around the world. One of such designers is Mabel Simpson, a Ghanaian fashion designer whose brand is known as “MSimps.” Her “Made in Ghana” accessories are sold in countries such as the United States, Australia, Nigeria and South Africa.

    In an interview with the BBC, Mabel talked about how she started her designing business with just 100 dollars. Today, she has grown the business to a reasonable size.

    Warsan Shire Announced As London’s First Young Poet Laureate

    Warsan Shire, 24, is the first ever young writer to be announced as a Poet Laureate. Warsan was selected from a shortlist of six young poets. As a London Poet Laureate, Warsan is going to spend the year in creating works that reflects the city of London.

    Warsan is originally from Kenyan but was born in Somali. Her residency will take place at  the Houses of Parliament.

    The announcement was made by Carol Ann Duffy who is the current holder of the title at a National Poetry Day event that took place at the Parliament.

    London Laureate is a scheme that was commissioned by the London Legacy Development Corporation as part of Spoke, a poetry and spoken word programme.

    It’s purpose is to provide people with a chance to watch, perform and develop careers in spoken word and performance poetry in and around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

    Chief executive Dennis Hone said: “I congratulate all those who took part and have shown London is blessed with some really talented poets.”

    “The decision to create a Young Poet Laureate for London is one part of our ambitious plans for arts and culture in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the surrounding area, he added.

    “It is our vision for east London to be a thriving cultural district and Warsan as the first Young Poet Laureate for London will play a key part in that transformation.”

They have joined forces with four of the most established venues in Shoreditch.     Redi Tlhabi Talks To Ian Rankin And Kenyan Crime Novelist Mukoma Wa Ngugi

    Today on Al Jazeera’s talk show South2North, Redi Tlhabi chats to three crime novelists: Professor Mukoma Wa Ngugi, the Kenyan-raised, American-based author of Black Star Nairobi; Professor Shamini Flint, the Malaysian-born, Singapore-based author of A Calamitous Chinese Killing; and Scotland’s Ian Rankin, whose latest number one best-seller, Standing In Another Man’s Grave, brings Inspector Rebus back from a five-year retirement.

    Ian believes that one reason why crime fiction persists as a bestselling genre is because, “It deals with a very basic question: why, decade after decade, century after century, do we continue to do bad things to each other?”

    When he started writing, crime novels were perceived differently, especially in Britain. “People still tended to think of Agatha Christie, of spinsters, titled gentlemen or Belgian detectives solving strange crimes involving unusual poisons and billiard rooms and stately homes and things happening in the vicarage we weren’t supposed to know about,” he says. “That was a very pastoral, curious version of England and Englishness.”

    In the late 20th century, he noticed a shift towards “a more urbanised crime fiction that did deal with social issues and politics… That is where I was coming from: a tradition of writing dark gothic tales but marrying that to a concern with modern, urban society.”

     

    He believes there’s an emerging generation of young authors who are particularly attracted to crime fiction because “they find things in the crime thriller that they don’t necessarily get from the literary novel. You get a great sense of place; you get a sense of big moral questions; you can talk about corruption in low and high places. Politics, the economy – nothing is off limits.”

    Similarly, Shamini used her Inspector Singh crime series to break away from the Western stereotype of Asia.

    “I decided to write crime because I wanted to write about contemporary Asia,” she says. “What I found was that most of the literature coming out of India was always the grand historical novel, and it always had people whose lives were determined by fate. They were born, a soothsayer would come along and say ‘Oh things are going to be bad for you kid!’ and it was that sort of novel. It’s so un-Asian, because Asians are the least likely people to be thinking about history because we are very forward-looking as a people. We are least likely to not have self-will and yet these books always seem to be about people who are not in control of their own fate.”

    She points out that if you moved the plots of many of the ‘great Asian novels’ to London or Edinburgh, readers would fall apart laughing. “So why does it become credible just because its from the exotic East? I just want people to understand that are we not that weird. We do things in a fairly normal way. We kill people for fairly normal reasons. You annoy me; you call me fat; I kill you. It’s easy; it doesn’t have to be about fate.”

    Mukoma is involved in projects which translate English books into Kiswahili and Kikuyu. He believes that language and narratives need to be spread to both the West as well as between global South cultures.

    “Even though I am trying to reach a universal audience, I still have a duty to my language,” he says. “What does it mean to be fluent, and to carry these worlds, in a language that is not mine? Shouldn’t I enrich my own language? Right now I am enriching the English language, extending English literature, shouldn’t I do this for my language as well?”

    The group discusses dealing with the critics, the pressure to create “tourism-board” depictions of their countries, and why everybody loves a good maverick.

    This week’s episode of South2North premieres at 19:30 GMT on Friday, 4 October 2013 and also screens on Saturday at 14h30, Sunday 04h30 and Monday 08h30.

    Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam “AFWA” 2013 Cancelled

    Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam, the first fashion week to target African and African inspired designs in the Netherlands, has to be cancelled. This event, scheduled to take place next month was cancelled because of its lack of sponsorship support. Below is the press release from the organisers.

    It is with much regret that the organisers of the Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam have announced that the AFWA ‘Avant Premiere’ (Preview) that was scheduled to launch in Amsterdam at the World Fashion Centre on November 1st, 2013 is forced to be cancelled. The main event is therefore postponed and rescheduled to hold in Spring/Summer2014 at the World Fashion Centre in Amsterdam.

    A highly acclaimed Amsterdam-based fashion event company helping African and African-inspired fashion designers at every stage of their careers, to showcase their creativity and talent on a global stage. The annual event is meant to be one of the most anticipated events of the year but due to a lack of sponsorship funds the event organisers have run into financial difficulties and have had to cancel the preview event.  An event of this magnitude needs the financial funding from the corporate world as well as the fashion industries and unfortunately, the support needed did not come through.

    At the eleventh hour, the organisers of Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam and the organisers of Africa Fashion Week London brainstormed over the numbers and tried to source additional funding. However, unfortunately, they could not find a solution that would do the AFWA2013 ‘Avant Premiere’ name justice. This event is meant to break new ground every summer and to not do that history justice would be undeserved.

    The Biggest African Fashion Exhibition preview strives to support designers, primarily through event management of fashion shows, catwalk displays, workshops and showcase events. Not only does this provide the opportunity for the world to explore new and exciting fashion, but also allows designers to express their creativity within a professionally produced event environment. The event aims to obtain a reputation for providing an outstanding platform for new talent to be seen in one of the world’s top fashion cities. It is always been the plan to carry out events and endeavours that represent those brands proudly and it’s unfortunate that this event lacked the funding from some key supporters that was required to make it a success.

    Everyone who has already registered for the event will be refunded their registration fees from AFWA organisers. Likewise, anyone who has booked accommodation with any AFWA hotel partners will be refunded their bookings.

    The organisers of the event would like to thank everyone that believed in this event and who planned to attend and also apologise for this unfortunate conclusion.

    Africa Fashion Week industry is a passionate group and everyone involved in putting this event on was dedicated and deeply passionate about the cause and are very disheartened at this turn of events. All the support shown to this event has been much appreciated.
