Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam CEO Wins Multiple Awards

Diana Tambe, the founder of Africa Fashion week Amsterdam, received multiple awards in a row! Just this month, Diana won the “Best Fashion Designer” of the year by ADMA (African Diaspora Merits Awards) as well as the “Emerging African Fashion Designer” of the year by the Voice Achievers Awards.
Diana is a multi-talented Amsterdam-based fashion designer, model and director of Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam (a company helping fashion designers at every stage of their careers to showcase their creativity and talent on a global stage).
In 2011, Miss Tambe launched her 1st red carpet collection under the Label, Blackpearl’s Secret. In that same year, She introduced the first and only Africa Fashion Week in Amsterdam. Her reason for setting up the fashion week was because, having been designing several seasonal collections since 2010, she realised there was no platform doing justice to her hard work as well as those of other upcoming African fashion designers in the Netherlands.
The first edition of Africa Fashion week Amsterdam was supposed to take place this month but has been cancelled and shifted to spring/summer 2014. The event is scheduled to take place at the World Fashion Centre Amsterdam.

AFWA, an Amsterdam-based fashion event company, is anticipated to help African and African-inspired fashion designers at every stage of their careers, to showcase their creativity and talent on a global stage. This will be primarily through event management of fashion shows, catwalk displays, workshops and showcase events. Not only will this provide the opportunity for the world to explore new and exciting fashion, but also allows designers to express their creativity within a professionally produced event environment.
This year’s AFWA event was cancelled due to the lack of financial backing. As a result, the organisers are calling on individuals and companies to support them by collaborating with them. Ms Tambe is inviting anyone who wishes to attend the event to give it the magnitude and importance it deserves.
Ms Diana Tambe said, “As you may know, Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam is an event very close to my heart. We believe that fashion can be used to inspire and motivate social change. We hope to make it sustainable.”
“My personal objective is to bring my personal contribution to the sustainable development of my country, eventually reducing the rate of unemployment and poverty. As an entrepreneur, part of my duties is to assume all responsibilities for the business, including assets and liabilities. Most youngsters/oldsters in the community look up to me as a source of inspiration,” she added.

Stiege’s Cards Are On The Table: Oxjam Shoreditch Takeover
Twenty-three-year-old rapper, Stiege, was the first of many acts to perform on stage at the Mother Bar in Shoreditch for the Oxjam event, Sunday 20th October. The young and talented rapper arrived early with his band along with a supportive family and friends. Prior to Steige’s energetic and amazing performance, he, his friends, and family partied on the dance floor, vibing to soulful house, R’n’B and dancehall.
As the crowd cheered Stiege and his band on to the stage, he walked with confidence – which complimented his sleek style. The band members were introduced and he explained that he was going to perform three songs. All of which will be on his latest EP, “Cards On The Table” that will be released later this year. Steige’s band consisted of three back up singers, ( two women and a man) an amazing drummer who we later found out was only thirteen years of age and two guitarists who rocked the hell out of their strings.
Before each song, Stiege would inform the audience about its title and give a short description of what the song was about, and how he was inspired to write it. This was the technique that Steige decided to use, not only because it allowed him to get connected with the crowd but as he was the first act on stage, it was essential that he got the crowd hyped and ready for the electrifying night that they were in for. What better way to do this than by making a connection with the crowd, which would enable them to feel comfortable and relaxed? Great move Stiege!
Once all three songs had been performed, the rapper and his band were applauded and Stiege said thank you to the audience for listening and making him feel welcome. Shortly after, the rapper and his band gracefully walked off stage where they continued to laugh, joke, and dance to the uplifting music.
I asked Stiege if there were any other acts that he was looking forward to seeing perform tonight across any of the four venues. He slowly replied, “I actually don’t know who else is performing tonight you know, I haven’t had a chance to look at the program.” Although he stated he would like to stick around to see the other acts perform, he informed me that it is not necessarily up to him. This was due to him travelling with his peers, one of which drove them all. Therefore, if the driver decided it was time to go, then it was most certainly time for them to go.
Roll on the next performer, as the Mother Bar audience awaits the next talented act, I think it is fair that they would certainly have big shoes to fill. After a fantastic start to an eventful charitable event. Stiege shall defiantly be remembered by those inside the walls of Mother Bar, hats off to you man! Certainly, your “cards are on the table.”

4 Gifts Ideas To Surprise Your Lady This Season
If you are that gentle who likes to pamper his lady with great treats, here are 4 gifts ideas to surprise your lady this season.
Hand Decorated Compact Mirrors
If there is something a majority of ladies never miss to have in their handbag or purse, it is a mirror. Ladies love their mirrors. They need it to check their face to know whether their makeup is in order or need a bit of fixing. They need it to check whether some piece of food is sticking in their gum. Or even lipstick that could sometime stain the their teeth. What about their hair? They need to know it is still properly styled, just they way they did it.

As a result, it is a good piece of gift item for your lady. And in doing so, you have to make sure it is not just an ordinary mirror but also one that will stand out. It has to be compact, fashionable and trendy.
Mont Bleu makes such mirrors. They are called, compact mirrors. These mirrors are hand made and decorated with glistening Swarovski crystals. The Swarovski stones comes in different colours as well as designs and patterns. There is bling written all over these pieces and no girl would refuse such a gift item. So, go ahead and pick one for your lady and she will thank you for it. You can check them out on compact-mirrors.net.
iPad Case
An iPad case is good gift item to purchase for your lady, if she already owns an iPad. As we all know, an iPad is an expensive and classy piece of gadget. However, with different pay monthly contracts that are affordable to almost everybody, it is very easy for anyone to own one. As a result, it is very difficult for a girl to differentiate hers and make it stand out in the crowd.
For this reason, if you’re looking for an item to present to your lady as a gift, you can get her one of these elegant iPad cases from Casecrown. They are trendy, functional and affordable. They can be purchased for around £22 and £31 ($35 – $50/€25 – €36). And they have a variety of styles and colours to choose from.
If you choose to go for the high-end designs, you can go for the Gucci iPad cases. But be aware they are much more expensive. The Gucci designs are so beautiful that they can be used as an iPad case/clutch purse. You can purchase one for around for £323 ($520/€378) and above.
Aqua Phone Case
If your girl does not own an iPad, she may own an iPhone. And you can find very beautiful accessories to purchase for her as a gift. One great iPhone accessory that you can surprise her with is this Aqua phone case.
These cases are waterproof to a depth of 1m. This means, even if it falls inside water, snow (both fresh and melting) or beaten by rain, her iPhone will still remain in good condition. And she would really appreciate you for being thoughtful enough to provide her phone with this little protection.
Elemis Spa Candles
These luxuriously and generously scented candles from Elemis are a great item to give to your lady anytime. They come in different flavours such as cinnamon, orange and vanilla and can be bought for £25 – £40.00 (€29 – €47). Ladies loves perfumes and pleasant smells. And having such a candle to give a refreshing scent in their living room or bedroom will be well appreciated. Especially this winter period that everything seem boring and cold. These scented and colourful candles can bring some life and flavour to a room.

Leather Gloves
With winter around and the cold that comes with it, this is the perfect time to give your lady a pair of leather gloves as a gift. Leather gloves have all the elements of elegance in them. They are not bulky like other kinds of hand gloves and can make a lady’s hand look slender and gorgeous. Very ladylike! You can find a range of leather gloves at John Lewis. There are cheap and expensive designer ones. The choice are limited and it all depends on your budget.

Media Has To Play A Very Different Role – Arianna Huffington Chats To Haru Mutasa
Tonight on Al Jazeera’s talk show South2North, Haru Mutasa chats to Arianna Huffington, co-founder of the Pulitzer Prize-winning online new site, The Huffington Post, and James Chau, a CCTV news presenter based in Beijing. The episode was filmed alongside The One Young World Summit at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.
On the need to spotlight the good
“Media has to play a very different role than it’s been playing,” says Arianna. “As well as doing all the things it does do, like holding the powers-that-be accountable and speaking truth to power, the media has to put the spotlight on the good things, on what is working. That is a huge responsibility and we are not doing a good enough job. We have the opportunity to help good things scale, to help them replicate, and we need to approach that with as much seriousness and as many resources as we are investing in covering bad news.”
She says The Huffington Post’s dedicated Good News section is one of their most popular. “In fact, people prefer to share good news,” she says.
On anonymity and online trolls
Arianna, James and Haru discuss The Huffington Post’s recent decision to ban online anonymity after struggling with online trolls.
“We make a big effort to keep the conversation civil,” says Arianna. “The Huffington Post has had almost 300m comments since we launched. We have an incredibly active community and we treasure that. If you come on a site and there are all these nasty comments, you don’t want to participate…. There have to be protections for whistle-blowers, for people speaking truth to power, exposing corruption at a risk to their own safety or livelihood. That we are going to maintain. But trolls who simply want to hide behind anonymity to indulge in ad hominemattacks basically spoil it for us, and there is no reason to allow that.”
On media in China
James says that in China, while new media is expanding rapidly, television is still the most reliable source of information. “TV is still the bedrock in China,” says James. “A lot of people don’t have stable electricity supplies, don’t have access to computers and wouldn’t even know how to use it if you put one in their hand. Mobile is breaking the barriers, but I think the television is still the root.”
Discussing the perceptions of limited media freedom in China, James says, “I haven’t been asked personally to change something, to drop a story. I’m living proof – as not only a journalist but as an AIDS activist, who can anchor on the news, mainstream in the evening, very publically, and can bring my stories onto all the programmes – that things do progress and that things are in flux.”
On why franchising The Huffington Post in Africa would be easy
Arianna says that bringing The Huffington Post to an African country like South Africa would be “easy.”
“Shall we do it?” she asks Haru. “The Huffington Post now has a template – of technology, of how we work editorially – so we have found it very easy to launch in other countries. With the exception of the UK and Canada, where we launched by ourselves, we’ve launched with media partners… They are 50/50 joint venture partnerships… Basically we hire together jointly the journalists who are going to run The Huffington Post in that country. It’s entirely rooted in that country’s culture. In Japan, the editor doesn’t speak English; when we speak, we have to have a translator. It’s like having a global media presence. When something happens in one country, like they are choosing the pope in Rome, we have all the journalists on the ground who can cover it and then we can translate it into the other languages. The same goes with blogs – if we have the President of France’s blog on the French site, we can translate it and have it available on all the other sites.”
Haru, a Zimbabwean-born Africa correspondent for Al Jazeera English, is filling in for Redi Tlhabi, who is on maternity leave.
This week’s episode of South2North premieres at 19:30 GMT on Friday, 25 October 2013 and also screens on Saturday at 14h30, Sunday 04h30 and Monday 08h30. For more info Aljazeera

Oxjaming It Up! Who Said Charity Events Have To Be Boring?
Shoreditch was the happening place to be last Sunday. With over forty diverse talented artists spread across four different venues, it was an outstanding sight to see. All the artists, supporters, and volunteers were exclusively there for a common cause. To help others! Each artist brought something new and tasteful to the stage, whether it was rapping, singing, or the sweet flow of poetry, they were all oxjaming it up. There were artists such as Mikel Ameen, Jody Brock, Aja Monet, and Daddy’s Girls, just to name a few. And the atmosphere across all four venues was both incredible and electrifying.

The Oxjam Shoreditch event was a combination of fundraising and entertainment. The main reason for the event was to achieve their objective, which is to raise as much money as possible to help Oxfam tackle the disturbing poverty and suffering around the world. The two were also combined to provide an amazing, entertainment experience whilst doing so. Talk about killing two beds with one stone.
It’s seven years on since when Oxjam first began. They now have on board, a network of supportive, talented, and creative people who take time out to unite every October. Their mission is to help those who are less fortunate than they are (Is that not amazing?).
SEE ALSO: Mikel Ameen: The World Changer Is Here!

Oxjam is well known for a number of successful events and many high profile celebrities such as Fatboy Slim and Damon Albam. They have become the major supporters of their various fundraising projects. These range from their multi-venue takeovers and their sponsored busk on top of mountains. However, it is their music festivals, that really get the heartbeat of the charity pumping.

With their millions of volunteers across fifty five countries and hundreds of Oxjam events taking place throughout October, it is with little wonder that volunteers are able to take their love for music and organize their own gigs in their local community, which reflects the local diversity. These gigs feature many established and up and coming artists who all have superb talents, (take it from me!).
As the end of October fast approaches, I am not sure what your calendar looks like for the remainder of this month. But Oxjam events have already filled mine up. If you have unfortunately missed out this month, be sure to attend and support Oxjam next year. With the opportunity to help make a difference whilst being entertained or contributing to the entertainment, it is hard to say no … right?
