UK Backs Down On £3,000 Visa Bonds

    1
    Theresa May, UK Home Secretary

According to a report by the Sunday Times UK, the British government has announced that it will be backing down on its plan to compel visitors from ‘high risk’ countries to pay a bond of £3,000 before they can be allowed to enter the country.

The countries under the supposed high risk include Nigeria, Kenya, India, Pakistan and three other countries. See the Sunday Times report below.

THE government is to abandon a controversial plan to impose £3,000 immigration bonds on visitors from “high-risk” countries in Africa and Asia after Nick Clegg threatened to block the policy.

The move will be seen by Labour as a humiliating U-turn for Theresa May, the home secretary. It came after David Cameron backed off from a full-scale confrontation with the Liberal Democrat leader, who was blocking the scheme’s progress through cabinet.

A pilot project to target visitors from seven countries — including India, Pakistan and Nigeria — who would have had to pay a cash guarantee or deposit to deter immigration abuse was to have been introduced this month.

The plan was to make visitors forfeit £3,000 if they failed to return home by the time their visas had expired. But in an announcement this weekend the government said it was cancelling the plan.

Mikel Ameen: The World Changer Is Here!

    0

They call him the world changer! And changing the world for the better, is exactly what Mikel Ameen intends to do. On Sunday 20th October, at the Oxjam event in Shoreditch, Mikel defiantly changed a few people’s worlds with his lyrical content and mind-blowing performance.

Mikel had arrived pretty early on in the night, one could consider that his early arrival was to support the other acts across the four venues that night. As he danced energetically in the downstairs room of Mother Bar, Mikel brightened up the room with his smile and embraced others with his calm and warm personality.

As the clock struck 9.30 pm, it was finally time for Mikel’s performance. Once on stage, Mikel informed the crowd on the number of songs he will be performing and that he would be doing without a live band. This meant the DJ was to simply play the instrumental from a cd given to him by Mikel himself.

“You ain’t ever lived till you found something to die for.” Wow, those were the memorable words that poured out of Mikel’s mouth whilst he performed his first of four songs. If you glanced around the room during this performance, you would see that the entire room was in a trance and was completely hooked and amazed at the poetic, positive words that Mikel rapped.

Song choice nUMBER 2 was announced by Mikel to be dedicated to a special woman. The lyrics to this particular song were defiantly heartfelt and extremely touching. The song expressed how a woman chose to be with and support Mikel even when he was at a low point in his life and when obtaining money was not easy. Lyrics such as “she chose the tramp, she sees the man, she chose the king, she knows who I am” and “… holes in my socks like my toes have just had enough, I go to the shop and its coppers I’m adding up, it’s not enough” are just a few of a very detailed insight into his personal life.

It was time for Mikel to perform his second to last song ‘Winner’ but before doing so, he requested that the crowd joins in and vibes with him. “I want everyone to join in right now because those who know me know I like to vibe in general. Yeah! So, I want you lots to just give me the same energy that I give you. That’s all I ask, yeah”  The crowd cheered, and his off. Once again, Mikel had the crowd hyped up in a trance, and as ‘Winner’ came to an end, he informed everyone that that was what you call world-changing music and that all should go and check it out and see how positive music can change the world.

It is a shame if you missed Mikel’s set as it truly was inspirational and interesting to see how rap music was used in a positive and influential way. However, music is not Mikel’s only love, as he is brother to actor Aml, it is no shock that Mikel also has a love for acting, and is currently a motivational activist.

Embarrassing Video: Passengers Struggling To Board Overbooked Arik Airline

    1

The incident took place on October 24 and was recorded by a passenger that goes by the name, @Onliskcarew. Below is what he has to say about the experience.

I was rather surprised at the service rendered by Arik Air Nigeria (one of Nigeria’s local flight operators) on the 24th of October 2013.

Despite the purchase of a valid travel ticket for the 1530hrs flight from PHC to LOS, Arik Air sold more tickets than the plane could carry (why for goodness sakes???). We the passengers where left stranded on the tarmac and to be honest, I was really baffled and amazed at the level of poor communication within Arik Air. Although it was not a safe environment, the ground staff were forced to handle things by themselves, and also had to make decisions without support and steer from the management who I would have assumed would know how to advice the Arik employees on the ground.

This got me thinking on how exposed these poor ground staff were, and also the extremely poor communication within the management of Arik Air. The staff where lucky not to have been violently attacked by the angry passenger who where left frustrated on the tarmac.

Nonetheless, we eventually made it to Lagos with my 11 suitcases at around 10pm but had to travel via Abuja. This left me with no option than to reschedule my trip overseas for the next day, pay for a night in a hotel, got my driver waiting for hours in the airport, move around in Lagos very late at night, and the worst part, miss my birthday dinner planned for me in Lagos. Thanks Arik Air.

Now Arik Air, some advice. Although it seems not be a culture of caring for your customer, please try and support your ground staff a lot better. These guys are at the end of your delivery and they play a key role to the image of your organisation. These poor guys on the ground get all the trouble due to the managements poor logistic planning, rather selfish way of thinking, poor communication, and arrogant approach towards customers (who have paid for ticket hence, a service rather than a favour). As a company I expect you all to make life easy for the ground staff, the same way those of you at the top do for yourselves. What will it take for you managers to think about this and understand the long term implications this causes to your organisation? This is not directed at low level managers but those of you right at the top. This has been highly disgraceful and I am highly disappointed at all the people that manage/run Arik Air on a day to day basis. You now have another highly disappointed customer.
