    Day 2: Africa Fashion Week London

    Day 2 of Africa Fashion Week London was the most memorable and most attended of the two-day event. The showroom was filled to the brim as designers showcase their collections at the 2016 edition of Africa Fashion Week London. The event’s second and last day took place on the 10th 0f September at Olympia West Hall in London. This was the same venue the event was organised last year.

    While there were two shows on day 1, day two had three shows. The first show was at 2pm, the second was at 4pm while the last was at 6pm. On day two, the show was opened by Victoria Grace and the entire show was closed by Mustafa Hassanali who is the headline designer of Africa Fashion Week London 2016.

    The wife of the Nigerian Vice President, Mrs Osibanjo was also at the event. She attended as a special guest of honour. She was there to support the STEP UP initiative that was created by her. STEP UP mission is to provide women with vocational training to become entrepreneurs. These are usually women with nothing to depend on. Some of the handbags made by the women trained by STEP UP were also showcased at the event. During her speech at #AFWL2016, Mrs Osibanjo enjoined attendees to support the women by purchasing some of the bags at the STEP UP exhibition stand.

    As the headline designer of Africa Fashion Week London 2016, Mustafa Hassanali did not disappoint the audience with his graceful and elegant collection. His collection featured laces, sequin, and other sheer fabrics.

    Ceasar Couture set the hall on fire when his pieces were showcased on the runway. The well-tailored men suit were showcased with lots of swag that got many people shouting and applauding the brand. Two Nigerian actors, Uti Nwachukwu and Gbenro Ajibade modelled exclusively for the brand.

    Van Else pieces are always colourful and elegant. The pieces are mainly short pants and blazers or long dresses in blazer style. Just like last year, the Dutch designer came with her own muse that attended the event modelled exclusively for her collection.

    Victoria Grace collection blends western and African culture in her collection by mixing African print fabric with western fabric to create styles that is suitable for every woman. Some of the pieces are very colour and appeal to women who love bold colours and textures. Others are more calm colours that are targetted at women who are not fans of loud and bold colours.

    The Co Identity and Mama Bisira collaborated to showcase a collection that featured a combination of uni colours and colourful prints as well as women accessories. The pieces are suitable for women who like to cover up and still look gorgeous and edgy.

    Signature Secret’s collection played with a lot of African print fabric through layering. One of the most prominent elements that one can see in most of the pieces is the large and layered collars.

    Day One: Africa Fashion Week London

    September 9 was the first day of Africa Fashion Week London that was held at Olympia West Hall that was held in Kensington, London. The show was opened by Didi Creations, a fashion brand owned by Nigerian born and London based designer. During a chat with her, the designer told us she was initially billed to exhibit at the show and did not put up a collection for the runway. She said only got to know she was going to showcase on the runway when it was just five days to the event and it took her three days to put her entire collection for the show.

    Over 50 designers participated at the two-day event. Some only exhibited at their stands, some showcased and exhibited as well, well others only showcased on the runway. On day one, several brands presented their collections under their names while brands like Trish O Couture, Tote Collections and Femi Bags showcased their collections under the umbrella of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). The NEPC is an organisation that is trying to promote Nigerian fashion to the international public by working with Nigerian fashion designers.

    The runway shows on Day one of Africa Fashion Week London started at 4pm. Two shows were scheduled for the day. The second and last show took place at 6pm.

    Didi Creations opened the Africa Fashion Week London 2016 event. She showcased her collections which feature modern Kaftan in light fabrics with bright and bold colours like red, blue, and yellow.

    DIDI CREATIONS Showcase Colourful And Modern Kaftan At AFWL2016

    Here is a peep at the SS17 collection of Didi Creations that was showcased on the first day of Africa Fashion Week London 2016. Didi Creations opened the 2016 event, even though the decision to showcase on the runway came a few days to the event (she told us in an interview). The collection features modern kaftan in soft and colourful fabrics like red, blue and mustard yellow. The kaftan pieces featured details such as belts and ruffles. The stylish and very comfy pieces come in maxi lengths as well as mid-lengths. According to Tina Ndidi Ugo who is the owner of Didi Creations, her collection was inspired by her daughter who also attended the event with her. The brand was founded in London in 2012

    Nigeria’s Bank of Industry At Africa Fashion Week London 2016

    Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BOI) will be present at the Africa Fashion Week London 2016 that will be taking place on the 9th and 10th of September in Olympia. The bank, which is Nigeria’s oldest, largest and most successful development financing institution – will be at the fashion event to meet Nigerians in London who would like to engage with the Bank of Industry on its services.

    Bank of Industry will have its own stand at Africa Fashion Week London 2016 where interested Nigerians in London can visit them.

    Actor Dr Winston Ellis To Host CA Award 2016

    Actor Dr Winston Ellis has been announced as the host of CA Award 2016. The British actor and three-times world martial arts champion will co-host the event with Patricia Stephanie Gillian – a serial entrepreneur, multiple award winner and mother of 4.

    Dr Winston Ellis has starred alongside Johnny Depp and Kiera Knightley in the first two ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films. Other film credits include roles in Batman: Dark Knight and Shiner (alongside Michael Caine) and – during his 10 years living in Hong Kong – appearances in many martial arts films including Jackie Chan’s Operation Condor, Black Mask starring Jet Li and The Quest, with Jean Claude Van Damme and Roger Moore.

    The CA Award is the Creative Africans Award organised in London by Chub Magazine to celebrate black people doing well in their chosen field. The event will be held at the Hilton Hotel Tower Bridge London in London on the 19th of November 2016.

    Bestow Elan to showcase at Africa Fashion Week London 2016. The event will be taking place on September 9 and 10 at Olympia in Kensington.     HER EXCELLENCY MRS OSINBAJO’S STEP UP TO EXHIBIT AT AFWL 2016

    STEP UP, an initiative of the wife of the Nigerian president Mrs Osinbajo will be exhibiting at the 2016 edition of Africa Fashion Week London that will be taking place at Olympia in Kensington. The two-day event has Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade as it’s brand ambassador. The “Johnny” singer was also the brand ambassador of Africa Fashion Week Nigeria 2016 that took place in Lagos on the 2nd and 3rd of July.

    STEP UP is an initiative of H.E Mrs Osinbajo, the Wife of the Vice President of Nigeria. It is a training program that was started in February 2009.

    The program trains women and men with various skills required to start up small businesses. The duration of the courses they provide range from one week to four weeks. Step Up is a mobile training that moves from one location to another. “From January to August this year, Step Up has trained 3,237 students,” the program claims.

    “Beautiful ladies bags in African fabric, a delight to many, is the proud product of our trainees from our Bag making Course. We have trained several beneficiaries and they have become entrepreneurs locally and internationally. Some are already employers of labor,” STEP UP.

    “Our former students have participated in some exhibitions- the African Fashion week Nigeria in July 2016 and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and ITC SheTrades Round Table and Exhibition in Abuja, also in July 2016,” STEP UP.

    Tina Lobondi & Ngone To Collaborate At Africa Fashion Week London 2016

    Fashion Designer, Tina Lobondi will be showcasing at the Africa Fashion Week London 2016 in collaboration with Ngone, a jewellery designer. The two brands will pair their pieces together and showcase it to guest at the event that will be taking place on September 9 and 10. Below are a short profile of the two brands.

    Tina Lobondi established her fashion label in Notting Hill, London in 2011. Combining African heritage with delicate French couture, her designs are up-market and classic.

    From India to Congo, materials are sourced globally and the collections are entirely produced in Paris and London. Fabrics are often printed with Africa-inspired patterns and mixed with precious materials such as silk and organza.

    She has worked with numerous artists including Grammy Award winner and New York-based singer Angelique Kidjo, and actress Thandie Newton.

    NGONE COLLECTIONS
    Ngone’s collections are feminine, timeless and rich in universal influences. She draws her inspiration from different cultures: Paris capital of high fashion where she lives, her African inheritance and during travels.

    Through the jewel, Ngone interprets a contrasting vision of the world in a spirit of fusion, to make her design unique and elegant. Sometimes, she mixes the metal with materials of garments as the silk, allied to stones and crystals. Available in necklaces, cuffs, earrings, jewels become headbands and hair ornaments as the whim takes her. Willing to produce high-end quality, all her collections are handmade in Paris in collaboration with craftsmen.
