African Print Outfits: Hurray Ankara Goes Mainstream!

It is great to see ankara African print outfits and fabrics go mainstream after being overlooked on the International fashion scene and therefore worn by only West African men and women. From Beyonce Knowles to Rihanna, Kelis, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Beyonce younger sister – Solange Knowles and Gwen Stephanie, we’ve seen how the ankara print has been a popular theme.

Apart from international celebrities rocking ankara outfits with pride, we’ve seen the fabric dominate a lot of runway shows during this fashion season. From American artist, Gwen Stefani who has launched a fashion line known as L.A.M.B’s and presented her Spring/Summer 2011 collection in ankara fabric, to other top designers who used the fabric for their designs – it is safe to say the ankara African print fabric has taken its right place.

While it is a shame some of the designers have refused to call it ankara and are now calling it tribal prints and other dodgy names, we all know what name they have been called for years before this international recognition and acceptance. In all, we’re happy the ankara fabric is taking a major stage and can only get better.

While most African designers have not started getting recognition for their pieces, it is still a good thing the African print fabric has become popular and will boost the sales and recognition of more designers from the moment.

A few African designers like Jewel by Lisa and Deola Sagoe are the only ones benefitting from the ankara reign. But hopefully, as the fabric gets more recognition, more designers from the continent will see their African print outfits on celebrities and fashionistas across the globe.

Miss Angola Wins Miss Universe 2011 Beauty Pageant

Gorgeous Leila Lopes from Angola has been crowned miss universe 2011 after competing with 88 other contestants representing their countries.

Miss Leila Lopes who beats 88 other competitors at the Brazil pageant is from Angola and has a big plan to help her home country who has suffered a history of war. He plans to focus on combating HIV around the globe. Shortly after taking the crown on Tuesday in South America’s largest city, Miss Lopes said: “As miss Angola, I will do a lot to help my people”. Miss Lopes was asked if she has ever had surgery of any kind. Responding to the question, Miss Lopes said that she has never had any cosmetic surgery of any kind and that her three tips for beauty were to get a lot of sleep, use sunblock even if it is not sunny and drink a lot of water. She was asked another question, what was your best weapon in the competition? She responded, “my best weapon was my smile.” She was asked if she has encountered any utterance of racism since she was one of the few blacks in the competition. Lopes said,” any racists need to seek help.”

The 25 years old is Angola’s first winner who beats 88 other contestants to win the title during the 60th anniversary of the world’s beauty pageant. She was asked in an interview what physical traits she will change if she could? She responded, “Thank God I am very satisfied with the way God created me so; I would not change a thing.” She further said “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty, and I have acquired wonderful principles from my family and I intend to keep it and follow it for the rest of my life.

Being the daughter of a diplomat and always moving to different places, Adama is well travelled with a multicultural outlook on life and this shows in her creative work. At the moment, Adama shares her time between Dakar, Los Angeles and Paris. These are also the three metropolitan cities where she draws her creative inspiration from.

In Style: Nigeria’s 51st Independence Day In Amsterdam

The Nigerian Independence day in Amsterdam was successful. The event was organised a Nigerian popularly known as “Monkey”planner. The occasion was officially opened by chief Ikenga who gave a brief history of Nigeria. It was then followed by the Nigerian National Anthem and A Birthday cake designed with the map of Nigeria.

After that, the artist took to the stage and dazzled all the guest with their performing skills. The artist who performed at the event are “Cross” and the Ghanaian duo known as “Brown & Sugar” based in The Netherlands as well as “Otis Maho” from Hamburg Germany. Another artist present at the event was DJ YG from Spain.
