Deadly Christmas in Nigeria as a Blast Hit Church Near Abuja During Service

According to officials, about 10 people have been killed while many more have been injured in a bomb blast at a Catholic church near the Nigerian capital Abuja.

The explosion ripped through St Theresa’s Church in Madalla as worshippers gathered for Christmas services.

An emergency official told reporters that the authorities were busy trying to cope with the casualties.

Security has been high after violence between Islamist gunmen and soldiers in northern Nigeria.

However, according to the BBC’s Fidelis Mbah in Lagos, no trouble had been expected in the capital.

National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) spokesman Yushau Shuaibu told the BBC that the explosion had happened in the street outside the church.

Nevertheless he said the church had been severely ruined by the explosion, and the number of dead was likely to rise above the present figure.

Earlier he told Reuters news agency: “We are presently evacuating the dead and the injured, but unfortunately we don’t have enough ambulances.

“Most of our ambulances have gone to operate on the major highways of the country.”

According to witnesses, windows of nearby houses had been crushed by the blast.

Officials at the local hospital said the situation of many of the wounded was severe, and they were looking for help from bigger medical facilities.

At the moment, no group has accepted responsibility for carrying out this attack. On the other hand, today’s explosion comes in the midst of a wave of attacks in Nigeria by a radical Muslim group identified as Boko Haram. According to an Associated Press calculation, the group has been responsible for at least 465 killings this year alone.

Health: Illegal Toxic Skin Bleaching Trade Exposed

    5

An investigation by Sky News has discovered that shops in London are selling unlicensed or prescription-only skin bleaching products to willing customers. These toxic skin bleaching products are supposed to be used for treatments and not as a daily body cream.

In Peckham, southeast London, the investigators purchased a tube of Fashion Fair Cream from two shops.

This product is unlicensed in the UK and contains Clobetasol Propionate, a prescription-only steroid used for the treatment of illnesses such as eczema or psoriasis.

Due to the risk of hazardous side-effects, its use should be controlled by a doctor, and it should not be sold over the counter to the general public.

These products are generally prescription-only products that are unlicensed for over the counter sale in the UK.

Similarly, in Peckham, the investigators purchased Movate, a cream that has not been tested or licensed in the UK, and also contains prescription-only ingredients.

In Brixton, they found Dermovate on sale at a beauty shop.

Although licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency, selling these products in the UK without prescription is illegal.

After first telling the sky team reported that they did not stock the item, the assistant found some behind the counter and sold it to them for £4.99.

Most skin-whitening creams are safe and legal to sell to the public. But those that are seen as toxic skin bleaching creams are the ones that are supposed to be sold only with prescriptions.

They are sold to women from Afro-Caribbean and Asian backgrounds where there can be a perception that fairer skin is more attractive or desirable.

But then again there is an illegal market in products that contain stronger ingredients that can cause uneven colour loss, intense skin irritations, rashes or permanent bleaching.

According to Hansa Dabee, an Asian, she started using skin-bleaching products at the age of fifteen, after experiencing what she describes as “cultural pressure” to have fairer skin.

According to her, “I wanted to make my skin appear lighter because I wanted my complexion to be clearer and I thought it would make me more attractive”.

“I used to watch Bollywood films and the actors appeared to be a lot lighter than your average Asian. They went on to approve lightening creams in commercials.

“At school, the boys would drool over pictures of Bollywood actresses on their phones. They were fascinated with how fair and light they were.

“Every time I used it I thought, ‘Wow, my skin looks so much clearer’. But I stopped using lightening cream about a year ago after considering the massive dangers it could have.”

Afro American singer Beyonce was recently in the middle of a controversy in which she appeared in photographs that looked as though they had been digitally enhanced to lighten her skin colour.

Local authorities have taken action to clamp down on shops illegally selling unlicensed bleaching creams.

In the past seven years, a total of 15 shops have successfully prosecuted by Southwark Council in south London.

When confronted, the shops that were visited by the investigators all denied selling illegal products.

The UK’s Biggest Shopping Day Ever!

    1

The UK could be making retail history today as analysts predict it is the busiest shopping day ever recorded in the country.

Visa Europe believes that the nation’s shoppers will use its cards to spend over £1m a minute, nearly £18,000 per second – totalling £1.5bn across the day.

The company upholds that the record spend will equate to year-on-year growth of around 8%.

On the other hand, the British Retail Consortium sounded a cautioning note for its members, whom the majority of them are struggling in the midst of a challenging economy.

According to director general Stephen Robertson, “After a late start to Christmas buying, consumers were out on the streets in greater number than for the same week in 2010, although the big question is whether it has translated into enough spending to make up for a largely disappointing year.

The UK's Biggest Shopping Day Ever!

“Retailers have been working hard to encourage people into their stores, running exceptionally high levels of promotions and discounts.

Mr Robertson continued: “They will be relieved to see that effort paying off, but for some, the season still hangs in the balance.

“Many sales are being made at the expense of margins and good trading.”

According to some of the big retailers, the so-called ‘man dash’ of men doing last minute shopping is expected to be a major factor.

Despite weather forecasters’ estimates of a mild Christmas, John Lewis has said that the purchases of lingerie, and speciality chocolates had soared at its department stores, with warm pyjamas also being popular.

Retailers have been working hard to inspire customers into their stores, running extraordinarily high levels of promotions and price cut. They will be relieved to see that effort paying off, but for some, the season still hangs in the balance.

According to the director general Stephen Robertson, British Retail Consortium, Selfridges is expected to see a similar trend, with West End retailers pointing to figures from past years suggesting 80% of men leave their Christmas shopping to till the last minute.

On the other hand, while December 23 may be the biggest shopping day overall, Visa predicts that the busiest shopping hour of the year will be on Christmas Eve between noon and 1pm, in a final flurry of activity before Christmas Day.

A rash of discounts and sales is likely to hit profit margins as stores fight to cajole cash-strapped shoppers through their doors.

According to Shopping comparison website Kelkoo, the average family spend this festive season will be close to £700.

Online sales are expected to soar by about 16% to £13.4bn this Christmas compared to last year, and in comparison to a 2% fall on the high street, according to the report.
