Police “Racial Profiling” on the Increase in UK

Police “Racial Profiling” on the Increase in UK

Black people in diaspora are face with racial profiling as a result of discrimination based on their skin colour, according to new analysis which reveals that “racial profiling” has increased over the past year. Black people are 30 times more likely than white people to be stopped and searched by police in England and Wales, Researchers say the findings, based on government statistics, represent the worst international record of discrimination involving stop and search.

The figures refer to the use of section 60, the contentious police power that allows officers to stop and search people without reasonable suspicion and which was cited as an aggravating factor behind the August riots. Analysis by the London School of Economics (LSE) and the Open Society Justice Initiative shows during the past 12 months a black person was 29.7 times more likely to be stopped and searched than a white person. That figure was 26.6 the previous year.

Police “Racial Profiling” on the Increase in UK

In 2009, black people were 10.7 times more likely to be stopped than whites under the controversial “exceptional” power. Mounting disquiet over the policy’s damaging effect on black communities prompted Scotland Yard last week to announce a scaling back of its use of section 60, which has become a central element of the Yard’s anti-knife crime strategy.

A separate analysis, based on Home Office data, reveals that less than 0.5% of section 60 searches led to an arrest for possession of a dangerous weapon, five times fewer than a decade ago. Dr Michael Shiner, of the campaign group StopWatch and the Mannheim Centre for Criminology at the LSE, said: “More than ever, we need policing to be fair and accountable. All too often impacted communities have complained about abusive police tactics only to be ignored or, worse still, told they are wrong. Searches that do not require individual suspicion are particularly divisive and should be conducted sparingly, if at all.

“The very existence of section 60 should be critically reviewed and, if it is found to be necessary, increased safeguards and strict criteria should be put in place, including judicial authorisation, before the power can be mobilised.”

On Friday, the IPCC conceded that stop and searches that yield no arrest were antagonistic and “highly intrusive”. A legal challenge that will ask the high court to rule section 60 “incompatible” with the European convention on human rights is under way. The case centres on a 37-year-old woman who claims she was targeted because she was black. Michael Oswald of Bhatt Murphy solicitors said there was clear statistical evidence that section 60 was being used in a discriminatory manner. He added: “There are not sufficient safeguards to ensure that the interference with individuals’ personal integrity and liberty that such searches entail is proportionate and in accordance with the law.”

Although, section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 allows a police officer to stop and search without suspicion in a designated area for a 24-hour period.  As it stands, it does not give any ground for targeting a person on the basis of race.

Nigerian Self Acclaimed Pastor Punished Son To Death

Nigerian Self Acclaimed Pastor Punished Son To Death

What would have prompted a mother to be so cold-blooded as to dispense the type of punishment that would result in the death of her own child? How obstinate or badly behaved can a child be to warrant death as Nigerian self-acclaimed pastor punished son to death?

These were the questions on the lips of nurses and doctors of St. Mary Hospital Gwagwalada, and police officers handling investigation in the matter.

The boy, Chiboy, was taken to the hospital with his hands swollen and peeling. He was fragile and could barely breathe.

His eyes were wide open and he kept complaining. One could tell that he was seriously in pains.

Regrettably, efforts invested into saving his life by the doctors at the hospital were rendered useless as he passed away a few hours later.

Chiboy’s mother, Rosemary Okeke was there as life slipped out of her 9-year-old son. She could hardly believe that the’ little’ punishment she had given to her boy would lead to his death.

But what manner of punishment could lead to death?
Okeke, who said she was the pastor of Sabbath church called Yeshua, the King of Kings church said she had tied her son’s hands with a ‘china’ cloth and had in addition put ‘small pepper’ into his eyes for disobeying her and proving stubborn.

She said: “We wanted to go out. I saw him putting on his sandals and I noticed that the buckle has spoilt. I asked him what happened to his sandals and he said that the buckle was spoilt long ago whereas it had just spoilt. I told him that I have asked him never to lie to me again and said I will punish him till I come back with his brother from where we were going.

“I told him to ‘hang in the air’ but he refused to do the punishment. I brought out a whip and wanted to flog him but he started struggling with me.’’

Okeke said she was angry that her boy was proving stubborn and “he wanted to show me that he was stronger than me. That was when I brought out the pepper and put a little in his eyes. I also called his 15-year-old brother to help me tie his hands and I left him in my room.’

Chiboy it was gathered stayed in the room from 7am 7.30pm crying and begging for forgiveness. But his tears fell on deaf ears as his mother who did not give him food paid him no attention.

“It was when I entered the house in the evening that I noticed that my son was not my son again. I shouted and called my neighbours who brought a car and took us to the hospital. The doctor said he won’t treat him unless we get a report from the police station. So we rushed to the police station,” she added.

One of the patients at the hospital who saw the situation of the boy had called the police to report the incident and they were requested to come with the boy to the police station

It was further gathered that at the police station, the police took the boy to a nearby hospital, St Mary’s Hospital Gwagwalada.

‘’The boy’s hands were peeling off. And the eyes were wide agape. The doctors were planning to amputate his hands in order to make sure the infection did not spread to other parts of his body. According to a nurse who chose to remain anonymous, “the doctor said that the effect of the pepper had already gone to the brain” (How can a mother pour pepper on her son? Was she trying to make pepper soup out of him?).

Ironically, Okeke ended up not going to where she had originally intended to go prior to when the sandals problem came up.

So many people have been asking what would come over a mother to enable her mete that kind of punishment to her own child.

“It was anger. I was just angry with him. It is just that the anger got out of hand,” she kept saying to herself.’
The rage certainly grew out of control because the 32-year-old mother found herself losing a child and is currently in police custody, at the Gwagwalada Divisional Headquarters.

Okeke has though rebutted the accusation that she intended to use the boy for rituals and swore to high heavens that Chiboy was her son.

“He is my son. His father is dead, he died long ago,” she said.

Okeke who lives in Angwan Hausawa in Gwagwalada said she had come to Gwagwalada to begin a branch of her church and that she had been residing in the town for the past six months.

“We are yet to build the church. We have a land. We are hoping to put a batcher there and start off until we can build a church. I consult for people. That is how I survive.

They pay consultancy fee for N500 and sometimes give me money for items we need for prayers,” she added.

But those are not the crux of the matter.

The matter is that Chiboy is dead. Dead by the hands of his mother who took her rage to extreme levels. She is now left with her 15-year-old child who will keep questioning why in the world he had assisted his mother to bind up his brother.

She is also not free from the police who are still astonished on how a piece of cloth may have possibly resulted to the terrible blisters on the child’s hands and eventually lead to his demise.

York Archbishop John Sentamu to Cameron: Don’t Legalise Gay Marriage

    0

Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York has called on David Cameron not to legalise gay marriage. According to the Archbishop of York, marriage must remain the unification between a man and a woman, and David Cameron will be acting similar to a “dictator” if he gives the permission for homosexual couples to wed.

During an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Dr John Sentamu, the second most senior cleric in the Church of England, expresses his views to ministers that they should not claim superiority over the Bible and tradition by consenting same-sex marriage.

The Government will open a discussion on the issue in March and the Prime Minister has pointed out that he wants it to be a crucial fragment of his leadership. However, the Archbishop says it is not the duty of the government to give a new meaning to marriage, threatening a new row between the Church and state just days after bishops in the House of Lords led a successful insurgence over plans to limit benefits.

According to Dr Sentamu, “Marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman, I don’t think it is the role of the state to define what marriage is. It is set in tradition and history and you can’t just [change it] overnight, no matter how powerful you are.

“We’ve seen dictators do it in different contexts and I don’t want to redefine very clear social structures that have been in existence for a long time and then overnight the state believes it could go in a particular way.

“It’s almost like somebody telling you that the Church, whose job is to worship God [will be] an arm of the Armed Forces. They must take arms and fight. You’re completely changing tradition.”

It was generally believed that the Church would have to consent to same-sex marriage for fright of giving the impression they are out of touch. Dr Sentamu says the bishops in the House of Lords did not attempt to stop Labour introducing civil partnerships in 2004; giving homosexual couples enhanced legal rights.

The Church accepts clergy who are in civil relationships but expects them to be celibate. The Archbishop says the Church was also satisfied with last year’s move to permit civil partnership ceremonies in places of worship, as long as it is voluntary and agreed by the governing body of any particular denomination.

But Dr Sentamu is against the homosexual civil marriage plan, and says the Government would encounter a rebellion on any modifications in legislation. His involvement may serve as a supporting cry for traditionalist Tories who oppose Mr Cameron’s plan.

“The rebellion is going to come not only from the bishops,” he says. “You’re going to get it from across the benches and in the Commons.

“If you genuinely would like the registration of civil partnerships to happen in a more general way, most people will say they can see the drift. But if you begin to call those ‘marriage’, you’re trying to change the English language.”

“That does not mean you diminish, condemn, criticise, patronise any same-sex relationships because that is not what the debate is about.

“The Church has always stood out – Jesus actually was the odd man out. I’d rather stick with Jesus than be popular because it looks odd.”

Dr Sentamu, in Jamaica to mark its 50 years of independence, also says the Church’s leadership needs to become less middle class.

Doreen Lawrence Criticizes The Government Over Racism

Doreen Lawrence, the mother of Stephen Lawrence has criticized the coalition government for not putting adequate amount of energy to fighting racism in the country.

According to what Doreen Lawrence, whose 18-year-old son was slayed in Eltham, south London, in 1993, told the Guardian “not heard them talk about race.”

At the beginning of this month David Norris, 35, and Gary Dobson, 36, were sentenced to14 and 15 years in prison respectively for the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Mrs. Lawrence informed the newspaper: “People take their lead from the government.”

She told the Guardian: “If the prime minister said ‘This is what I’d like to see happen in our society’ …people will try to work towards that. At the moment I’m not sure exactly what they are doing around race.”

Mrs Lawrence also condemned the government for not sending her a letter after the trial “in acknowledgement of what her family has been deprived of for so long”.

Stephen Lawrence’s brother Stuart tells the paper: “David Cameron has not sent my mum a letter saying sorry it has taken so long. It indicates the position of the Conservative regime. I don’t think they care at all.”

Mrs Lawrence, 59, has three grandchildren and she said spending time with them reduced the agony of her son’s loss a little and added: “You can’t think about doom and gloom. You can’t forget so you try to do things, put things in place, to lessen the pain.”

On the other hand, she said she was annoyed about the manner the general public still treats individuals of African and Afro-Caribbean background.

In order to succeed, “You have to be better than your [white] contemporaries by three or four times,” she claimed.

    Highlighting the positive she said,
“Even if you have the qualifications, if their name doesn’t sound English enough then they don’t get an interview, and if they do manage to get an interview they don’t get the job,” she added.

Mrs Lawrence told the Guardian that schools, colleges and the media needs to do more to convey positive stories, instead of holding on to negative ones.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister has spoken on a number of occasions of his admiration for Doreen Lawrence.

“He recently paid tribute to Mrs Lawrence and her family for the great bravery they have shown and he believes that their tireless fight for justice has helped to change the country for the better.

“He also recently made clear that he believes that although things have changed for the better, there is still a problem with racism in this country and more work to be done to tackle it.”

Here is Shy’m transparent corset. According to Styleite

Because France’s NRJ Music Festival is apparently where terrible clothes go to be photographed, R&B singer Shy’m wore a transparent, feathered and anatomically accurate corset to take home the title of Francophone Female Artist of the Year. But let’s go back to that dress.
<p>We have no idea who designed it (or what they were thinking), but it’s as unattractive as it is absurd. Paired with what appears to be a bedsheet wrapped around Shy’m waist, the corset features two nipples and a bellybutton. As for the styling, well, don’t even get us started on that hair — but points for the red lipstick?
