Rokhaya Diallo – Black, French and Fight Against Racism

Rokhaya Diallo - Black, French and on the Barricades Against Racism
    Rokhaya Diallo

French activist, writer and television and radio commentatorRokhaya Diallo, 33, is a new force in the country’s media. The author of the recently released book “Racisme Mode D’emploi” (A Racism User Guide), Diallo created Les Indivisibles (The Indivisible), an organization which uses humour to fight racism. On May 23, the organization will present its annual Y’a Bon Awards, which highlights the most racist statements of the year.

    BY EPEE HERVE

    Tell us about your background

I studied law and then I went to business school where I studied mass communications. I was interested in audiovisual production. I love animation and worked for Disney France and for (cartoonist) Johan Sfar. Now I have my own production company and have some TV and radio projects coming out soon. My activist background started back when I was an adviser for local youth for the city of La Courneuve (in the suburb of Paris) in 2001. I joined the group by chance when it was first created. The city said it would give me a scholarship for business school, but in exchange I would have to work for its youth council. Eventually I became president. At the same time I was involved with feminist issues and the anti-globalization movement. When I saw the way the media discussed the riots (in 2005) and the issue of the burqa, I became interested in why people do not challenge dominant media reporting. So, together with a group of friends I created “Les Indivisibles” (The Indivisible). We wanted to fight racism in the media using humor and irony; respond to racist comments and reinforce the fact that we were French too. Since I had worked in the animation industry, we decided to create a website with cartoons. We talked about the racism we faced in everyday life and challenged France’s debate on national identity. Things really picked up after we were featured in the newspaper. I started appearing in different media and Canal Plus (TV) and RTL (radio) asked me to be a commentator.

How many people are in Les Indivisibles?

Rokhaya Diallo - Black, French and Fight Against Racism
Rokhaya Diallo and members of Les Indivisibles name the most racist statements of the year at the annual Y'a Bon Awards.

There are around 200 members and a council of six. Ten people run the association. We create cartoons and speak in schools, and prisons. We write articles for our website and have created a ceremony (2009) called the Y’a Bon Awards, where we name the most racist statements of the year. The next ceremony will be May 23rd. Right now we are working on a cartoon series for national TV. It’s called “Etoi t koi” and is co-produced with a young company from the suburbs, DACP (De l’Autre Côté du Periph).

You were living in La Courneuve when the riots broke out in 2005. What is your view of what happened?

I was shocked by the way politicians spoke about the city. Before the riots, Nicolas Sarkozy (the French President was the interior minister at the time) came to La Courneuve and said he wanted to “Nettoyer les cités au karcher.” (‘Clean out the area with a Karcher’ – a well-known high-pressure water cleaner). Later he came back and I was asked to help arrange a meeting with young people, but I refused because I didn’t want them to be associated with Nicolas Sarkozy. Later, he used the term “hoodlum” in Argenteuil (a suburb of Paris). I knew then that something was really wrong. During the riots I focused on the way the media was reporting them. I remember watching the debates on television. I discovered Eric Zemmour (a conservative journalist and TV commentator). I found what he said racist but nobody seemed to be able to stop him. And then there were Alain Finkelkraut’s (a French-Jewish philosopher) comments about `Islamized’ suburbs and prominent historian Helene Carrère D’ Encausse who blamed the riots on polygamous Africans. Only a few people responded to them and this is one of the reasons why I created Les Indivisibles. The riots provided a credible reason for some people to become Islamophobic. I believed we needed to balance the debate. I never thought I would become a commentator, challenging the views espoused by people who I consider harmful.

How have politicians reacted to the Y’a Bon Awards?

The first time we had the Y’a Bon Awards we did a press conference at the French parliament. A French Socialist deputy helped us to find a place, though the party was not involved. Politician Eric Raoult (who won in 2010) did not understand why he was chosen because he said he had always fought for freedom. We also chose Eric Zemmour who said he thought the ceremony was ridiculous. We invited each nominee to come and explain their points of view but none came.

Did you have any prominent personalities among your judges?

The first year, we had well-known black journalist Audrey Pulvar and former soccer player Lilian Thuram, historian and writer François Durpaire, former Miss France, Sonia Rolland and actress Aissa Maiga.

What do you do on TV and radio?

Rokhaya Diallo is making sure that no racist statement goes unanswered. PHOTO: SYLVAIN LAPORTE

I work for I-Tele, which is owned by the Canal Plus group. In the morning I’m on I -Télé, and on Wednesday night I’m on Canal Plus. Then I do RTL radio on Sunday morning where I take part in debates. I also have a column called “Life Elsewhere.” My topics include education, the environment, the black Caucus, foreign policies, culture etc. On I-Télé I chose topics from the news. On RTL, I’m the only black journalist debating several other reporters. We discuss everything. Right now with the debates about Islam, I can happily say what I think. If I were alone at home listening to the show I would be upset.

Journalist Eric Zemmour works for I-Télé and RTL. How do you feel about his working for the same organisations as you?

I don’t sleep well knowing that time is being given to a racist person. What disgusts me the most is that I pay for France Television and I don’t want people to insult me. RTL and I-Télé are private but France Television is national and owned by the French state. It’s a public service that must embody France’s values – Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. We shouldn’t have to listen to someone who has been convicted of inciting racial discrimination. For media like RTL, I believe they think they’re fine because I’m there. They say to themselves, ‘we are not racist, we have Rokhaya.’ I think Mr. Eric Zemmour is being used because many people, including journalists, think like him.

Are you connected with the leftist Socialist Party?

I’m not a Socialist Party member. I feel more like a leftist though. I have spoken at Socialist Party conferences and gotten booed. I told them Nicolas Sarkozy was the first to president to give blacks and Arabs ministerial level positions. We never used to see them on the cover of our news magazines, but both Rama Yade (the former Senegalese-born Secretary of State) and Rachida Dati (the former Minister of Justice who is of North African origin) have since made covers. It’s good for the next generation to see different people; to see that they could be a government minister and not only a football player or rapper.

Ryanair Slammed for ‘Sexist’ Bikini Calendar

    0

After numerous complaints about a provocative Ryanair advert featuring a calendar bursting with a bevy of bikini-clad women, the discount airline has been rapped by Sweden’s advertising watchdog which ruled the advert was “sexist”.

The calendar, released in November, was the 2012 edition of Ryanair’s Cabin Crew Charity Calendar, featuring scantily clad Ryanair stewardesses.

In December, the Swedish Advertising Ombudsman (Reklamombudsmannen – RO) reported having received a barrage of complaints from irate Swedes about the advertisements promoting the calendar.

According to many, the racy images of women in lingerie accompanied by text reading “Our prices are red hot” with a subnote “and our staff” were derogatory toward women.

Ryanair slammed for 'sexist' bikini calendar
    ryanair bikini calender

All told, the agency received complaints from a total of 56 individuals, as well as from the two pro-gender equality organizations.

At the time, Ryanair spokesperson Stephen McNamara defended the calendar, despite the flood of complaints from angry Swedes.

“Ryanair’s cabin crew calendar has raised €500,000 ($672,000) for charity in just five years and we will continue to support the right of our crew to take their clothes off to raise money for those who need it most,” he told The Local in December.

In a ruling issued on Wednesday, however, the watchdog proclaimed that the advertising campaign was “sexist”.

According to the ombudsman, the women featured in the calendar had “no relation” to the products being advertised and that “through their clothing and poses the women are being protrayed as pure sex objects”.

As such, the adverts present women in an “offensive manner” and could be considered sexist, therefore constituting a breach of Article 4 of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Consolidated Code of Advertising and Marketing Communication.

Ryanair has now been given the opportunity to comment, but has not responded as yet, according to a statement from the ombudsman.

CUT UP Collective is an awesome project from three Brussels-based creative minds: make-up artist Nadjma Ramahatali and fashion designers Sylvie Iweanya and Noémie Nuo.

Noémie owns the Wake Up! fashion shop in Brussels and the Nuo brand. Together they work on several projects. They are responsible for the ‘Trust the Colors’ parties in Brussels and take care of make-up and styling for different creative talents in Belgium.

Their style is defined by colorful patterns and ‘Afro styles’, which is recently a striking trend, not only in Brussels but all over urban Europe.

Cut Up was recently featured in the Belgian issue of Elle magazine. Magali Elali interviewed them for the Belgian style-website styletoday.be. In order to discover these interesting artist world wide, I feature a translation from their latest interview with Magali Elali. You can find the original post here.

Interview by Magali Elali at styletoday.be

    Highlights in 2011

Sylvia: It’s a sentimental break up that allowed me to focus on my work and to make my priorities. But it was the formation of CUT UP and all the work we did together that made 2011 a memorable year.
Noémie: My highlights of 2011 was the creation of CUT UP and the positive evolution for my shop WAKE UP (31 Rue Malibran, 1050 Brussels-Ixelles).
Nadjma: For me too, it was the creation of the collective with Sylvia and Noémie and the resulting encounters we had.

     Foto: MIQUY AGUIAR FERREIRA DONGE

Sylvia: Several projects are planned such as shootings, expo’s and collaborations with Sandrine Astier and photographs Miquy Ferreira, Donge Février andDavid Widart. Furthermore we will organize a event and defile for my Adela Juju creations and the publication of a mini fanzine CUT UP.
Noémie: I want to transform CUT UP into an association, do defile’s with us 3 and elaborate my NUO label.
Nadjma: To make the collective grow, managing the expo and become an even better make-up artist.

    Trends and People IN 2012
Sylvia: Concerning trends we will go back to minimalism, with edited cuts, misleadingly simple cuts and the choice of good basics will be important. Moreover, there are more and more different kinds of colorful sequins available, which is lovely.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
Noémie: The lack of sunshine in Belgium will be compensated with a balance of colours. A strong style is Style Pantry. Much of my inspiration, for clothes, colors and expo’s, I find through Noir Near Future.

Nigerian Underwear Bomber Appeals Life Term For Attempted Terrorism

Nigerian Underwear Bomber Appeals Life Term For Attempted Terrorism

Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab nicknamed “underwear bomber” whom a life sentence was passed on for trying to blow up a jetliner with almost 300 passengers using a bomb sewn into his underwear on Christmas Day 2009 has appealed the penance.

According to reports from the Associated Press, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s notice of appeal was dated Thursday and posted Friday in the electronic court record for the federal court in Detroit where he was given the sentence.

On Friday, an email seeking comment was sent to a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit.

The 25 years old “underwear bomber”, pleaded guilty to all charges related to the attempt on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit. The inability of the bomb to properly detonate saved the lives of the almost three hundred passengers onboard the flight and burned Abdulmutallab’s groin.

Abdulmutallab’s attempt to bomb the aeroplane has caused citizens to have fresh fears that terrorists could still bring down an American jetliner more than eight years after 9/11. The “Underwear Bomber” failed terrorist attack has prompted accelerated installation of body scanners across airports in the nation.

According to the judge statement to the “underwear bomber”, life in prison is a “just punishment for what he has done.” “The defendant poses a significant ongoing threat to the safety of American citizens everywhere.”

Anthony Chambers, an attorney assigned to help Abdulmutallab, said a mandatory life sentence was cruel and unconstitutional punishment for a crime that didn’t physically hurt anyone except Abdulmutallab.

However, the government disagrees with that point of view and insisted that plenty of harm had been done with Abdulmutallab’s action.

Unrepentant Abdulmutallab seemed to relish the sentence and defended his actions as rooted in the Muslim holy book, the Quran. “Mujahedeen are proud to kill in the name of God,” he said. “Today is a day of victory.”

During the trial process, a 52-second FBI video of the mock explosion that showed the impact the explosives on Abdulmutallab would have caused was played out in court. The unremorseful “underwear bomber” shouted “God is Great!” twice while watching the video.

According to U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds who presided over the case set aside Chamber’s call for a lesser sentence, adding that Abdulmutallab, who described the day as a “day of victory”, had shown no remorse for his actions.

Abdulmutallab had sat with a passive look on his face as Judge Edmunds handed down the maximum penalty for the crime he committed.

The singer appeared on Good Morning America with her campaign partner Ricky Martin where she said the issue was personal to her. Furthermore, she said the campaign was part of promoting  her family’s heritage.

The superstar revealed that his uncle who live in Trinidad, died as a resulting of contacting AIDS. According to the artist, the campaign will not only be in the Caribbean, they also want to carry it out universally. According to Nicki Minaj, AIDS doesn’t discriminate based on nationality or sexual orientation. “AIDS is killing a lot of people today, especially Black women, I don’t want people to think that this is a gay disease or disease of the 80s”, she said. Black History Month 2012 in Europe: Celebrating Black Presence in Europe

    0

Traditionally Black History Month (BHM) is celebrated in the USA in the month of February and in the UK in the month of October. However, even this month several events take place in London too. In continental Europe BHM has been celebrated for years, usually also in February. See former post on the BHM of the past years (201120102009).

While I don’t know about any events in the Latin countries (France, Italy, Spain and Portugal) centered around their respective black histories, black communities in the Netherlands and Germany have been celebrating BHM for years.

This month activities will take place in Berlin, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. If any of you guys knows about other events taking place for BHM in continental Europe, feel free to inform us through a comment.

Below I will give a short overview of BHM events in Berlin, Amsterdam and Rotterdam with their respective links.

Christmas Day Underwear Bomber Gets Life Sentence

The ex-student of University College London has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for his attempt to blow up himself as well as the almost three hundred passengers that were on the plane.

Abdulmutallab wore a white t-shirt and skull cap and sat impassively as the sentence was read out to him and the audience.

“This was an act of terrorism that cannot be quibbled with,” said US District Judge Nancy Edmunds, who imposed the maximum sentence allowed.

Prior to the sentence, the 25-year-old used a four-minute address to the court to repeat that his attack was attended to avenge “the attacks of the United States on Muslims.”

The plane left Amsterdam with 290 people on board. As it approached Detroit, Abdulmutallab tried but failed to ignite a device in his underwear before he was overpowered by a Dutch passenger.  Abdulmutallab suffered severe burns from the incident.

He admitted to eight charges including conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

When pleading guilty in October, he called the bomb a “blessed weapon to save the lives of innocent Muslims.”

According to what Abdulmutallab told the court, “I intended to wreck a US aircraft for the US wreckage of Muslim lands and property.”

ALSO SEE: Woman From Hell Slaps, Kicks, Stomp On A Child For Throwing Up.

“If you laugh at us now we will laugh at you later, on the day of judgment,” he added and shouted “Allahu akbar” [God is great] as he left the court.

Abdulmutallab has been held in prison in Michigan pending the trial, and during interviews with US investigators, said he had received bomb training from al-Qaeda militants in Yemen

Video footage later emerged showing Abdulmutallab at a jihadi training camp, in which militants shoot guns at British and Israeli flags, as well as planes.

In the footage, he also delivered what appeared to be a martyrdom message, saying: “You brotherhood of Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula have the right to wage jihad because the enemy is in your land, with their armies, the Jews and the Christians and their agents. Allah said if you do not fight back, he will punish you and replace you.”

Abdulmutallab was under the tutelage of the so-called Osama bin Laden of the internet, US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in Yemen last September.

Awlaki is believed to have recruited Abdulmutallab while in London.

In what is thought to have been one of his final internet video messages, Awlaki said: “Our brother Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has succeeded in breaking through the security systems that have cost the US government alone over $40bn since 9/11.

“It was only a technical issue with the device that saved the flight from total destruction. however, the attempts of the Mujahadeen will not cease.”

Awlaki was also linked to other British-based men linked to al-Qaeda, including 7/7 bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer, jailed radical cleric Abu Hamza and Roshonara Choudhry, who attempted to kill MP Steven Timms because he had supported the invasion of Iraq.
