The Rotterdam Carnival is not only about beauty, it is also about cultural inheritance. People from different cultural backgrounds were  dressed in colourful attires and amazing costumes performing and parading the street with different drum beats and different dance styles. They also had various trucks driving through the street, representing different cultures and countries such as Suriname, The Netherlands Antilles, Cape Verde, Brazil, Turkey, Morocco, The Netherlands and a whole lot more. The majority of the countries that were represented are those from South America. In addition to the cultural attires and dancing, there was also the availability of diversified dishes from several countries.

The most interesting thing about this carnival is the fact that it is free and anyone can attend. It is a celebration of the whole community, across all social layers, devoid of origin, color, education and position. The celebration proceeded till late in the night with live musicians who performed on stage at the Churchillplein in Rotterdam.

African Bridal Show – The Essence of Traditional African Culture

    1

London’s first ever African Bridal Show (ABS) got off to a triumphant start last week as it showcased the best of traditional African wedding services.

In a one of a kind wedding exhibition, an eclectic collection of wedding services not only restored choice and passion back into the community but demonstrated to visitors how the uniqueness of African bridal beauty can be found right in the heart of London.

Held at the prestigious white stone brick Hallam Conference Centre, no one would expect such vibrancy and energy to resonate from within the building.

Yet once welcomed inside, an entire two floors unveiled a whole range of eager exhibitors- from wedding planners, to dress designers, to caterers and cake makers!

The non-stop buzz throughout the day not only illustrated the enthusiasm generated by the show but also proved that the essence of traditional African culture doesn’t have to be diluted here in the UK.

In fact, the services needed to incorporate African heritage into any special day are right here on our doorstep.

One exhibitor showcasing her bespoke bridal and evening gowns on the day was Kemi Farquarson. Starting out as a new designer, Kemi is passionate about her roots and about bringing them to her work.

Kemi utilises traditional dress designs and mixes them with African fabrics. Speaking about the day she said:

“It was a great opportunity for us to showcase our Bridal collection. Especially since as Kemi Boutiques’ ready to wear collection was inspired by travel, and specifically created for the bride wanting to reflect her culture be it African or Asian.

It was a wonderful event with a wide variety of exhibitors from designer gowns to talking drums, offering its visitors lots of quality choices for a creative and elegant wedding day.”

ABS claims to have two clear aims; on the one hand giving the community a one-stop-shop for their African wedding, and on the other hand equally passionate about providing exposure for a multitude of African wedding services.

A spokesperson for ABS said: “There are so many interesting parts of an African wedding that we want to see come alive.”

Even those with merely an ear of curiosity found themselves culturally immersed for an hour with over 40 exquisitely decorated stands to look at, a live band and an African DJ to listen to, as well as plenty of free food and cake samples to nibble on!

If you missed ABS, why not look out for The Mahogany Bridal Show, currently the largest African Caribbean bridal fashion show in Europe, which will be taking place on 21st October at Westminster College or the Brides of Culture Multicultural Bridal Exhibition which will be taking place on Saturday the 8th of September 2012.

Cameroon Athletes ‘Missing’ from London 2012 Olympics Amid Asylum Fears

    0

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]even Cameroonian athletes that were brought to the UK to participate at the London 2012 Olympics have disappeared and it is feared that their aim is to remain in the country by seeking asylum. It is also reported that these fears has been admitted by the team’s officials.

Missing athletes, clockwise from top left, Drusille Ngako, Paul Ekane Edingue, Thomas Essomba, Serge Ambomo, Blaise Yepmou Mendouo, Abdon Mewoli and Christian Donfack Adjoufack.

The seven athletes, including the entire boxing team and half its swimming   team, were reported missing earlier this week in a major embarrassment for   the African nation.

Authorities admitted on Tuesday that the five boxers, swimmer and a female   football player were feared to have left in order to stay in Europe for   “economic reasons”.

Team officials informed the government about the possible defections on Monday   night after rumours swept the Games Village, in Stratford, east London, that   the athletes had gone missing.

Those reported missing include Drusille Ngako, 25, a reserve goalkeeper for   the women’s football and 21 year-old Paul Ekane Edingue, who was one of two   athletes representing the country in swimming.

The boxing team comprised Thomas Essomba, 24, Christian Donfack Adjoufack, 28,   Yhyacinthe Abdon Mewoli, Serge Ambomo, both 26, and 27 year-old Blaise   Yepmou MIt is believed to be the biggest such defection of the Games.

The group are not yet breaking British immigration rules after new   accreditation rules, introduced to bypass normal visa procedures, meant all   Olympic athletes, and their families, could stay in the country until early   November.

Home Office sources also insisted that all athletes were “freely leave the   Olympic Games village if they wish”.

It is understood that none of the seven athletes have yet applied for asylum   in Britain.

Despite finding none of their personal belonging, officials suggested the   group may have gone sightseeing or visited friends.

But David Ojong, Cameroon’s head of mission to London 2012, confirmed   officials’ fears that the group had absconded.

In an embarrassing letter to his government’s Ministry of Sports and Physical   Education, he admitted the group had “disappeared” without explanation.

“What began as rumour has finally turned out to be true,” he wrote. “Seven   Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have   disappeared from the Olympic Village.”

He said that out of the team’s 60 athletes, 28 had gone home, 24 were still in   the village while the rest had possibly “defected”. He later held crisis   talks with the Sports Minister Adoum Garoua at the Olympic village.

Mr Ojong said Ngako, was the first to disappear after she was not one of the   18 members picked following pre-Olympic training in Scotland early last   month.

The goalkeeper of Lorema, a Yaounde-based female football team, vanished after   her team-mates left for Coventry for their last pre-Olympics match against New Zealand just days before the start of the Games.

A few days later, Edingue, originally from Bomono, went missing before he was   due to compete in the 50m freestyle. None of his personal belongings were   later found in his room.

The boxing team, who have all been eliminated from the Games, disappeared from   the Olympic village on Sunday morning.

Essomba, from Ebolowa, competed in the 49kg category, Adjoufack, from Yaoundé,   the country’s capital, in the 80kg and Abdon, from Etoa, was knocked out of   the 60kg division,

Mendouo, from Douala, the country’s biggest city, was a competitor in the   above 91kg class while Ambomo, from Ngoksa, who competed in the 64kg.

Four of the athletes were last seen at a team reception at the Royal Garden   Hotel, next to Kensington Palace, west London, on Friday. The country has   just two athletes left in competition.

It is not the first time Cameroonian athletes have disappeared during   international sports competitions.

At past Francophonie and Commonwealth Games as well as junior soccer   competitions, several Cameroonians have quit their delegation without   official consent.

In June, an Ethiopian torchbearer, Natnael Yemane, 15, also disappeared after   he went missing from a hotel in Nottingham.

Meanwhile three Sudanese athletes who hoped to compete in the Games were last   month reported missing amid claims they would apply for political asylum.

Another competitor, thought to be a middle distance runner from an African   country, also claimed he was being persecuted in his homeland after walking   into a police station in Leeds.

On Tuesday, a Home Office spokesman said: “We don’t comment on individual   cases.”

International Olympic Committee officials insisted they had not heard about   the missing athletes.

“We are unaware of it,” said Mark Adams, an IOC spokesman.

A London 2012 spokesman referred inquiries to the Cameroon team, whose   spokesman was unavailable for comment.

Greece Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants Leads to Thousands of Arrests

    5

Thousands of migrants are being held in detention centres near Athens before being deported back to their home countries.

Greece Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants Leads to Thousands of Arrests

Greek authorities have begun one of the country’s biggest crackdowns yet on suspected illegal immigrants, deploying 4,500 police around Athens and detaining more than 7,000 immigrants in less than 72 hours.

Most have been released, but about 2,000, mostly Africans and Asians, were arrested. They were sent to holding centres pending deportation in an operation that officials, bizarrely, elected to call Xenios Zeus after the Greek god of hospitality.

On Sunday, 88 undocumented Pakistanis were put on planes, accompanied by guards, back to their home country.

“We will not allow our towns, or our country, to be occupied and become a migrant ghetto,” said Athens’ hardline public-order minister, Nikos Dendias, as authorities discussed plans to build eight detention centres capable of holding up to 10,000 immigrants, in the capital.

Widely seen as the easiest entry point to the west, Greece has had a surge of new arrivals, with government figures showing more than 100 migrants daily crossing the country’s porous border with Turkey. The majority go to Athens, a magnet for migrants desperate to find work before moving on to other parts of Europe. An estimated million immigrants are believed to live in Greece where the population is barely 11 million.

But the country’s economic crisis and growing political radicalisation has given rise to a xenophobic backlash, the uncontrolled influx blamed for a sharp spike in violent crime.

The neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, which has vowed to rid Greece of “migrant scum”, has seen its popularity soar with the party capturing an unprecedented 6.9% of the vote in parliamentary elections six weeks ago.

Racist attacks by black-clad men associated with extremists have escalated dangerously, according to a recent report by Human Rights Watch.

On Tuesday anti-immigrant fervour grew following the prosecution of a Pakistani who appeared in court accused of assaulting a teenage Greek girl on the Cycladic iIsle of Paros.

In this atmosphere Athens’ fragile conservative-lead coalition has taken action. Dendias described the problem of immigrants as “perhaps even bigger than our financial one”.

“The country is being lost,” he told Skai TV. “What is happening now is [Greece’s] greatest invasion ever. Not since the Dorians invaded some 3,000 years ago has it received such a flow of immigration.”

Greece Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants Leads to Thousands of Arrests

Defending the crackdown, he insisted it was imperative to preventing the debt-stricken nation sliding into further chaos and collapse. “Our social fabric is in danger of unravelling,” he said.

In the coming weeks arrested migrants would be put in a detention centre outside Athens and unused police academies in the north of the country before being deported, he added. Immigrants were often living in such appalling conditions it was “to their benefit to be repatriated”.

On Tuesday Walid Omar, an Iraqi Kurd, was sitting in an internet cafe in Athens’ historic city centre when a policeman walked in. The migrant knew the officer well. As a friend of the cafe owner, Omar regularly stopped by and the policeman did too.

But the officer was unusually terse. “He told me and everyone else who did not look Greek to follow him. For the next two hours we were made to wait in a windowless bus, and then under the sun, before they first inspected our clothes and then inspected our papers at the police station,” said the Iraqi Kurd whose documents proved he was legal in the country that has been his home for the past 15 years.

“The whole procedure took around five hours and there was a lot of shouting,” he continued in fluent Greek. “An Algerian, a young boy, was badly beaten in front of everyone. People were really scared.”

Officials said the campaign, which has coincided with the reinforcement of patrols along the Greek-Turkish border, had been also prompted by fears of a new influx of immigrants from Syria.

For the most part the media has welcomed the move with the Kathimerini newspaper opining on Tuesday that security was finally “returning to the centre of Athens”.

But the scale of the operation has prompted widespread criticism. The left-wing main opposition Syriza party called the crackdown “a pogrom” and “insult to justice and humanity”. Migrants, it said, were being used to divert attention from unpopular economic policies, including more savage spending cuts, demanded by the EU and IMF in return for much needed rescue funds.

“It is a communications stunt aimed at concealing the true crackdown against public-sector wages, pensions and benefits that the government has agreed to in recent days.”

The Greek office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees expressed fears that refugees from war-torn countries and genuine asylum seekers could be among those summarily deported.

Since the start of the year 8,000 migrants have voluntarily sought repatriation, with Greece’s situation, economically, socially and politically, having become ever more inhospitable towards them.

Nigerian Blessing Okagbare Qualifies for Women’s Olympic 100m Finals

    1

Blessing Okagbare has turned on the heat as she fired herself back into grace and stardom, a stage that was unsure of in first few heats  in the 2012 Olympics but now it’s all smiles for her and Nigerians alike as she launched herself into the final of the women’s Olympic 100m, the medal winning stage.

Nigerian Blessing Okagbare Qualifies for Women’s Olympic 100m Finals
    Blessing Okagbare

It wasn’t a very sweet story in the heat 3 for the Nigerian as she stumbled off her block in lan5 but in quick realisation of the events that could follow her un-coordinated strategy, she took the challenges as she took the advantage she never had from the start as she flashed past Tianna Madison of the US to hit he finishing line and luckily for her she hit new personal best of 10.92s which also placed her fourth, thanks to determination.

However, the medals hurdle is main event which would be taking place tonight and the Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists will be known by tonight, we good for Blessing Okagbare as she has raised the Nigerian flag high but it was a not so sweet a story for her compatriot Gloria Asunmu a 100m semi-finalist as her personal best 11.21s could only get her at fifth position and in the 400m race, Regina George and Omolara Omotosho both failed to qualify for the final after placing fifth and fourth in their heats.

Okagbare’s start out of the blocks has been seen as her hindrance in launching her quick into stable contention and it is hoped that she realises that and if it can nabbed before her final race, then Nigeria may well be registered on the medals table tonight.

The final should be quite explosive with all the usual suspects taking part, with Olympic champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce leading the pack.

Okoagabre will be standing head-to-head in the 100m finals with American sprinters, Carmelita Jeter and Allyson Felix; and Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica.
