Just days after President Barack Obama promised the United States will launch a proportional attack on North Korea for hacking and putting Sony’s computers out of service, North Korean’s internet has gone completely down.
According to the news that was first reported by North Korea Tech, the country’s internet connectivity started going bad on Sunday night and steadily continued so until it went completely offline on Monday morning.
In a media conference that took place last Friday, President Obama promised the US will respond “at a place and time and manner that we choose,” when he addressed the audience about North Korea’s attack on Sony’s computers and consequently threatening a terrorist attack on the company if it releases a a fictional movie in which North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un was assassinated.
“I haven’t seen such a steady beat of routing instability and outages in KP before,” Doug Madory, director of Internet analysis at DYN Research, told North Korea Tech. “Usually there are isolated blips, not continuous connectivity problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are absorbing some sort of attack presently.”
The whole saga started because North Korea did not like the fact its leader was assassinated in the movie. As a result, they hacked into Sony’s computer network rendering thousands of them inoperable and forced Sony to to go offline with is entire computer network.
North Korea then went further to threaten Sony that they’ll unleash terror attacks on US citizens if the Interview is not taken off theaters. Sony obeyed North Korea’s orders and ended up losing almost $200m.
When Obama heard about the incident and how Sony handled it, it told the company to go ahead and release the movie as the US does take lightly to threats. He then promised the United States will retaliate for the attack on Sony.
And few days after that press conference, North Korea is suffering major Internet outages as the country’s internet connectivity has totally gone down.
The United States has declined commenting on the situation as there are speculations they might have been behind North Korea’s attack.
