#Unfairandlovely Social Campaign Celebrates Dark Skin

    0

Skin bleaching is not only common among African women but also among Asian women like the Indians and the Chinese. In these places, the fairer the skin, the more beautiful a woman is.

And in the case of African women, it’s normal for women to hear things like, “you’re beautiful for a black lady”. Making it look like black and beauty do not go together and that it is an exceptional case to see a woman who is dark skinned and beautiful.

And to be seen as beautiful, a lot of women use skin bleaching products such as creams, pills, and surgical method to erase their dark skin and look whiter.

To celebrate dark skin, new social media campaign with the hashtag –  #unfairandlovely has gone global and receiving a lot of attention. It’s purpose is to challenge the popular view that fair skin is the most attractive.

See below, an excerpt of how the BBC is reporting it.

As part of the bleaching culture, new creams have been introduced to lighten armpit hair and even female genitals in the last few years.

Over the years, campaigners have tried to challenge this belief – they argue that beauty is more than skin deep and that dark is beautiful too.
In recent weeks, three students from the University of Texas, Austin, have launched a new campaign which has become a talking point on social media around the world.

It was inspired by a project that Pax Jones, a 21-year-old black student at the University of Texas in Austin, began in December.
She created a photo series featuring stunning images of her South Asian classmates, sisters Mirusha and Yanusha Yogarajah.

“Our goal was to combat colourism and the under-representation of people of colour in the media. We were trying to challenge the way colourism permeates our lives,” Ms Jones told the BBC over the phone from Austin.

The series, called “Unfair & Lovely”, became a hit and inspired the hashtag #unfairandlovely – named after the hugely popular Indian skin-lightening cream Fair and Lovely.

The campaign, which asked dark-skinned people to put their photos on social media, generated lively discussions on Twitter and Facebook and saw nearly 1,000 people posting their photos on Instagram.

Mirusha Yogarajah told the BBC she readily agreed to be a part of the campaign because colourism is rampant within the South Asian community.

“Most of us are advised not to go out in the sun because we’ll get darker. It’s as if darkness is undesirable.

“In college, I was abused by a South Asian person who had lighter skin. And someone once threw a bleach balloon at me.”

Such incidents, Ms Yogarajah says, are deeply humiliating.

“At the time they happened, it was really hard for me to see myself as valuable. It is difficult to understand why people will dehumanise you for the way you look. I felt very vulnerable,” she says.

Ms Jones, who says she has been ridiculed for her “hair texture” and “wide nose”, agreed.

“We wanted to start a conversation and I think we have succeeded in that”.

From April Non EU Citizens Will Be Deported From The UK For Earning Less Than £35,000

From next month, non-EU migrants earning less than £35,000 will be forced to leave.

The new Home Office policy, which comes into force on April 6, applies to all overseas workers who have been in the UK for five years on a Tier 2 visa.

If they can’t prove that they’re earning more than £35,000, they will be denied settlement and will face deportation.

Teachers, IT professionals and journalists could all be badly affected.

A petition launched at the beginning of the year called for the threshold to be reconsidered – it gathered more than 100,000 signatures and was debated in parliament last week.

    So what’s actually changing?
To settle in the UK as a skilled worker, non-EU migrants need to have a Tier 2 visa. For this you need:

An offer for a job in the UK that pays at least £20,800
Have had at least £945 in your bank account for 90 days
A certificate of sponsorship from your employer (which can cost between £536 and £1,476)
To pay a £200 annual healthcare surcharge
To prove your English language proficiency
After five years on this visa, skilled workers are able to apply for ‘indefinite leave to remain’ – and this is what is about to change.

From April, anyone applying for indefinite leave to remain will need to earn at least £35,000.

IN MUMBAI: NIGERIAN RONALDO FAN STABS LIONEL MESSI FAN TO DEATH

    0

    messi-ronaldo-fans

That football fanatics can love the game to death was proved last morning, when one Nigerian man killed his friend after an argument on who is the better footballer – Messi or Ronaldo.

The two men and a group of friends had gathered at a friend’s house in Nallasopara (E) to celebrate Obinna Michael Durumchukwu’s 34th birthday on Saturday night. By Sunday morning, most of the friends had left, while the owner of the house retired to the bedroom. Michael and another friend – the accused, Chukwuma Nwabu (22) – continued to hang out at the house and were watching a football match.

Some time between 9.30 and 10 am, an argument broke out about who is the best footballer. Michael supported Argentina and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, while Nwabu argued that Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid and Portugal star) was better.
Verbal abuses began to fly thick and fast, and Nwabu hit Michael, who threw a glass tumbler at him in retaliation. The tumbler missed Nwabu’s head and smashed on the wall instead. Incensed, Nwabu picked up a broken glass shard and rammed it into Michael’s throat.

Arcade Content’s Kyle Lewis directed Exodus, a nine-minute short film showcasing five tracks from South African rapper Riky Rick’s gold-selling debut album, Family Values.

A visual feast in three chapters, Exodus is full of the striking, distinctly African symbolism that Kyle has become known for. Shot in Khayelitsha, the short film is an ambitious move away from both the traditional music video format and stereotypical hip-hop imagery.

    south-african-creatives-and-media

Leading global industry trade Shots named Exodus a ‘HotShot’ – their monthly picks of the best work to appear on the site. Hype Magazine praised it as “pure visual art”; OkayAfrica called it “visually stunning”; and We-Are-Awesome described it as “next level”, while Afripop name-checked Kyle as “increasingly the go-to-guy for the scene’s more pioneering visual treatments.”

Fuseg, Kyle’s previous collaboration with Riky Rick, became the award-winning rapper’s first music video to top one million views on YouTube.

Kyle won the 2014 South African Music Award for Best Music Video for The Parlotones Sleepwalker and was shortlisted again last year for Tumi In Defense of my Art.

He is repped by Arcade, a new division of Egg Films that produces content that falls outside the realm of traditional TV commercials, like brand films, music videos, and web series.
