wrapPING IT UP – The Gèlè Tea Couture Fashion Event

    1

On Saturday, September 14, 2013, Gèlè Tea, the couture fashion event will take place in London. Gèlè Tea Couture Fashion is an event that raises awareness about dementia. The event will have top designers such as Adebayo Jones, Clariscia Gill and Kosibah exclusively showcasing their collections to the audience.

Whether you’re looking for headwear for wedding season or something to tie for a glorious hair day, Gèlè Tea promise to have styles so hot that they’re wrapped up until the big day!

This year, Gèlè Tea is going back to the historical roots of gèlè, to fashions our great great grandmothers would have tied and it evolves with a bit of a twist until the introduction of the urban styles that are lighting the streets of London, Atlanta, New York and Chicago.

As for the fashion…it’s unprecedented that three major designers are launching collections at an awareness raising event that honours and remembers people who have lived with or are living with dementia– truly fashion for a cause.

Attendees will have the opportunity to have a gèlè tied and this year, a lucky guest will have a gèlè named after them.  The organisers hope for it to trend like the Simem and Butterfly collection (2012) that went global.

You can check out some fresh new fashion looks too with makeup artists Bolanle Okusanya Feyita and Juliet Onyeka Osodi and extraordinary hairstyles by hair designer Kasia Fortuna.

ALSO SEE: Gele Trendy Head Scarves: Making An Exotic African Royal Statement.

Gèlè Tea welcomes plus size designer and love your curves champion Kemi Boutique who will be launching an exciting new collection ahead of the UK’s first plus size bridal show.

There will be raffles and silent auctions to provide attendees with the opportunity to bid for a Clariscia Gill original and a Lyze Bamigbola Silas fascinator. It’s an opportunity not to be missed especially when you add the award-winning models, Rosemary Chilishe, Samar, Siobhan Ridguard and Vanessa Agyemang to the mix. It will be head turning.

Importantly, Gèlè Tea will be raising awareness of dementia. Singer and songwriter, Lánre, will be performing and be encouraging attendees to sing the updated and official version of Memories  The gèlè song and Dementia Nurse Specialist and Queen’s Nurse Morejoy Saineti, will be speaking about people’s experiences.

Gèlè Tea is named in honour of a gèlè enthusiast living with Alzheimer’s. Though there is an emphasis on gèlè per se, Gèlè Tea draws attention to headwear, which is universal.

The use of Gèlè is symbolic as dementia is about the brain/mind and Gèlè Tea draws attention to the head.

Ladies are invited to wear a Gèlè, hat or another form of headwear. Gèlès can be purchased and styled on the day. Men are invited to wear hats.

Proceeds from raffles and gèlè styling will go to support the work of Dementia UK.

African Influences In Fashion: Ankara Fashion Transformation

    0

Hello African print lover, come in here and take a look at African influences in fashion, and acceptance in the international fashion scene.

    • African Influences in fashion
    • Blending African print with western fashion

European fashions have always been hungry for something new, exciting, and enticingly exotic. Each new season generally brings the influence of some new culture to the front of the runway; however, there’s one particular influence that has been a consistent presence for years and continues to be reinvented in fresh, innovative ways. Whether it’s traditional prints, cowrie shell accents or chic new hairstyles, African influences have become a predominant staple in mainstream fashion.

Becoming popular in the late 1960s, African influence was first recognised in mainstream American culture and fashion in the ways of natural hairstyles, such as the Afro. In addition, designers began to incorporate traditional African materials into their clothing and designs, including shells, wooden beads, and natural grasses. Since then, there has hardly been a generation that hasn’t been influenced in some way by original African fashions and trends.

While African influences can be seen in nearly every facet of the fashion world, the designer swimwear industry has been one of the most influenced by the trend. For example, animal prints inspired by African cheetahs, leopards, zebras, tigers, and snakes have become one of the most classic and popular swim trends in history. Luckily for the animals, most of today’s prints are faux and simply serve as inspiration for luxe swimwear fabrics.

Along with those fierce animal prints, traditional African tribal motifs have made their mark in both the fashion and swim fashion realms as well. Typically featuring rich, vibrant colours, geometric patterns, and/or strong detailed lines, African-inspired tribal prints help spice up any day or nighttime ensemble, both on and off the beach.

Last but not least, fashion, swimwear, and accessory designers have all benefited from adding African-inspired embellishments and details into their designs. Whether you’re talking delicate beadwork, feathers, wooden beads, or faux animal claws and teeth, these African-inspired accents help transform ordinary items into extraordinary pieces. For example, a basic black swimsuit can be transformed with the addition of African-inspired beading on the suit or straps. Add a stack of wooden bangles and a tribal print wedge and you have an inspired beach-chic look. Any way you choose to wear it, African-inspired fashions are a surefire way to add desert-level heat to your look.

Miler, 41, rejected the invitation as a result of Russia’s recently-passed anti-gay laws. In a letter to the festival’s director, Miller wrote,

“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” Miller wrote. the 41-year-old wrote. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.

I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.
Until then. Wentworth Miller, He added.”

Filmmaker Returns To Her Native Zimbabwe In Al Jazeera Documentary

    2

The Bag on My Back premieres on Wednesday, 21 August 2013 at 20:00 GMT on Witness, Al Jazeera’s flagship documentary strand.

Zimbabwe in the early 1980s was a land of plenty; newly-liberated, with productive farms and an education system the envy of its neighbours.

Within one person’s childhood all that changed. Filmmaker Tapiwa Chipfupa – now based in South Africa – returns to the country of her birth to understand why the catastrophe happened.

Guided by a box of old family photos and phone calls to her parents, in exile in the UK, she traces the story of her family’s life across Zimbabwe and the parallel story of the decline and collapse of the country.

Told from the perspective of a middle class African, this is a story of remembrance, of coming to terms with exile and change and a reminder of the need to guard and protect hard-won freedoms.

As Tapiwa asks in the documentary, “Why would you want something if you’re not going to look after it? What do you want it for?”

The Bag on my Back can be seen from be seen from Wednesday, August 21, at the following GMT: Wednesday: 2000; Thursday: 1200; Friday: 0100; and Saturday: 0600.

South Africa: Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial Set For March

    0

A date has been set for the trial of South African athlete Oscar Pistorius for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at a hearing at Pretoria magistrates’ court.

The prosecutor in the case said the dates of 3 to 20 March had been mutually agreed for the trial.

The prosecution handed a copy of the indictment to Mr Pistorius.

Mr Pistorius denies murdering Ms Steenkamp. He says he shot her after mistaking her for an intruder.

He was granted bail in February and has since resumed some low-key training.

During Monday’s brief hearing, prosecutor Gerrie Nel also said he planned to transfer case to the high court: “We have prepared the indictment.”

Oscar Pistorius looked stern-faced as he appeared in court, says the BBC’s Andrew Harding at the hearing. Before proceedings started, he could be seen crying and holding hands with his siblings.

Mr Pistorius was also indicted on a charge of illegal possession of ammunition.

The double amputee won gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and also competed at the Olympics.

His arrest in February stunned many South Africans who saw him as a national sporting hero after his long legal battle to be able to take part in the Olympics.

Oscar Pistorius and his murdered grilfriend, Reeva Steenkamp

    Ballistic evidence
State prosecutors are arguing that the killing was premeditated, a charge which carries a sentence of life imprisonment. They say he killed Ms Steenkamp intentionally after a fight.

But Mr Pistorius says he shot his girlfriend through the bathroom door of his home in Pretoria after mistaking her for a burglar.

The prosecution handed over details of its case against Mr Pistorius at Monday’s hearing, including a witness list and forensic reports.

Much depends on ballistic evidence from the bathroom where Ms Steenkamp was shot, our correspondent says.

South African newspapers have reported that at least some of that forensic evidence appears to back up Mr Pistorius’s version of events, he continues.

However, the prosecution is expected to call witnesses who will say the Olympic runner was preoccupied with guns, and had been arguing with his girlfriend.

Last week, the police wrapped up their six-month investigation into Ms Steenkamp’s killing.

“The South African Police Service is hopeful that justice will prevail,” a statement from the office of South Africa’s national police commissioner read.

Mr Pistorius returned to court on what would have been Reeva Steenkamp’s 30th birthday.

In June, Oscar Pistorius resumed “low-key” training as a way to help him “process the trauma”, a statement on his website read.

Mr Pistorius was freed on a bail of R1million (£74,000; $110,000). A court in March eased his travel restrictions, allowing him to leave South Africa to compete as long as he complied with certain conditions.
