The December 2014 – January 2015 issue of Forbes Africa Woman is here with Winnie Mandela and Zindzi Mandela on the cover. In this issue, the wife and daughter of South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, philanthropist, politician and former President who served the country from 1994 to 1999 talked about how the 25th anniversary of Mandela’s release from prison is fast approaching. Mandela served 27 years in prison.

The duo also talked about how it has been difficult to cope without Mandela. “It has been difficult to cope,” Winnie and Zindzi said.

Mandela who received over 250 honours, including the US Presidential Medal of Freedom was the first black chief executive of South Africa and the first to be elected in a fully representative and democratic election.

Generally referred to as the “Father of the Nation, his government concentrated on wiping out the footprints of apartheid by fighting against institutionalised racism, discrimination and poverty – as well as encouraging racial reconciliation among all South Africans.

Also often called by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba, or as Tata (“Father”), he is held in deep respect within South Africa. He was also honoured by the Russians who awarded him the Soviet Order of Lenin.

The 1993 Nobel Peace Prize winner suffered from a prolonged respiratory infection and died on the 5th of December 2013 at the age of 95. He was surrounded by his family members at the time he departed.
