Africa’s First City: Lagos And Its People On The National Geographic

In an article that was featured on the January issue of the National Geographic Magazine and named Lagos as Africa’s first city, Photographer Robin Hammond visited Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria where he took pictures of different people and locations representing the city and its people.

This photo was taken at the sawmill district on mainland Lagos where thousands of poor people work to make a daily living. Prominent on this site are a patchwork of workshops and shanties.

This photo features a Nigerian wedding with women wearing the popular and colourful Aseobi and their head wrapped in elegant Gele head tie and statement necklaces.

Featuring the popular yellow and black stripped buses that represents one of the popular signature of Lagos as a city, this photograph was taken at the famous  Idumota Market on Lagos Island. The buses are there to pick up workers returning to their homes in the mainland at the end of the workday. Most Lgosians live on the mainland.
