While the rest of the world and London to be precise was buzzing with the 2012 Olympic Games, the second edition of Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) was busy playing the Games in prints to an audience of about ten thousand people. Organised by CEO, Ronke Ademiluyi, the fashion week took place on Friday the 3rd and on Saturday the 4th of August 2012 at London Spitalfields Market. At the event, established and upcoming African designers showcased their exotic and glamorous collections to the audience.

The two days event featured different sessions of exhibitions and fashion shows that were characterised with African wax prints, bright colours, glamour, elegance, outrageousness as well as trendy designs and fabrics. This was clearly a statement that African fashion is no longer for Africans or worn only in Africa, but as a part of a global trend that cannot be ignored by the global fashion industry.

Africa Fashion Week London featured 60 renowned African designers who exhibited their designs and brands to the glaring eyes of their enthusiastic audience at the Spitalfields Market. There was a combination of runways as well as stands where buyers were able to purchase products directly from designers.

Some of the designers who showcased at the fashion extravaganza with glamour and glitz are, Ghanaian Brigitte Merki, Nigerian Remi Lagos and Berry’s Couture,  London-based Adebayo Jones, House of Ferrah, Jimiking, Kiki Clothing, Adaora’s, Trish O Couture, Bebegrafiti, Lyze Hats, Tee Threads, Ozora, etc.

With Africa Fashion Week growing bigger with each edition, there is no denying the fact that the interest on African Fashion is growing and becoming more and more mainstream.
