Abigail Tackie-Yarboi is Super Carer of the Year

A single mum from Stockwell, Abigail Tackie-Yarboi has been acclaimed the super carer of the year for taking care of one of her heavily disabled child, her disabled brother as well as two of her other children. Mrs Tackie was awarded the Lambeth councils carer of the year for voluntarily caring and dedicating herself for her disabled child and brother. There are about 6 million people in the UK caring voluntarily for family members and friends who aresick, weak or disabled.

According to Councillor Jim Dickson, a cabinet member for health and wellbeing, “This event is a highlight because it recognises some amazing people who give so much and make huge commitments.

“Every one of those nominated has made an outstanding contribution and deserves our thanks.

At the event were about 40 other carers and their friends. All nominees were awarded a certificate, a shopping voucher, a bunch of flowers and an enjoyable cream team and jazz music. In addition to what all other nominees got, Abigail also received the sum of £250, two tickets to the 2012 London Olympics as well as a special trophy.

Carers support with personal things like getting someone dressed, turning them in their sleep, helping them to the loo, helping them move about or administering their medication. Carers also help with things like grocery, washing, cleaning, food preparation, filling in forms or managing their finances.
